Across Singapore, these bars place thoughtful design at the centre of the experience, using considered interiors to shape atmosphere from the moment you arrive…

Bar Bon Funk
Bar Bon Funk blends hi-fi sound with warm, nostalgic design, pairing vintage furniture, custom hi-fi speakers and a lived-in, home-like atmosphere with chef-owner Keirin Buck’s signature food and drinks.

Night Hawk
Named after Edward Hopper’s iconic painting Nighthawks, this bar captures the same mood but with a touch of futuristic nostalgia. Just like the evocative artwork, it has a way of transporting guests to another time and place without forsaking a sense of intimacy.

Live Twice
Live Twice is an intimate bar that channels a Japanese mid-century modern aesthetic, using plywood panelling, shoji screens and vintage furniture to create a calm, home-like retreat. Inspired by the Bond film You Only Live Twice, it pairs izakaya-style dishes and Western influences with a refined, original cocktail programme.

Offtrack
Set in a former karaoke lounge, music continues to take the stage in this restaurant-bar, but with a fresh spin. Drawing inspiration from Japan’s jazz kissas and mid-century modern style, co-founder Dean Chew has designed a compelling venue made for envelope-pushing guest DJ sets.

A little late to the party but @softervolumes’ Bars book is out now. Grateful for the opportunity to write about the Asian nightspots that have raised the bar when it comes to drinks and design. Pick up a copy at Softer Volumes’ website.

Big thank you to @kintsugijoe and @nicholasv.studio for the commission.

Dean Chew @funk_bstrd
DRAWN, Singapore

Growing up immersed in architecture through his family, Dean Chew’s early exposure to construction sites and his mother’s encouragement fostered a keen eye for detail and a love for drawing. Despite graduating in architecture and working at various firms, he found a more unconventional path appealing, fueled by his interest in electronic music and sub-culture.

He became a partner at FUUR associates for a decade, amassing a portfolio of F&B, hospitality, retail, and commercial projects. Alongside this, he co-founded the influential music label and collective @darkerthanwax and DJed extensively.

During the pandemic, Dean established his spatial design practice, @drawn_sg and conceptualised @offtrack.sg, a music-centric venue that has become a vital creative space, notably ranking among Asia’s 50 Best Bars. Driven by curiosity, Dean seamlessly blends design and music, defining him as both an artist and most importantly, a human being.

Singapore-based spatial design consultancy DRAWN. (@drawn_sg ) has transformed a heritage shophouse in Tiong Bahru into Magpie—a restaurant that celebrates cross-cultural cuisine through materiality, ambiance, and atmospheric design.

Drawing inspiration from the chef-owner’s Fijian heritage and passion for reggae music, the studio crafted an immersive dining environment that seamlessly blends Pacific influences with contemporary design sensibilities. The space is characterized by a rich material palette including dark-stained wood, oxidized steel panels, lime plaster walls, and preserved ceramic tiles.

An open kitchen anchors the restaurant’s heart, allowing diners to connect with the culinary process. Custom hi-fi speakers, strategically placed at opposite ends of the dining area, create an intimate soundscape that enhances the visual experience.

The entrance is marked by a striking bar clad entirely in rusted mild steel, its weathered patina lending warmth to the arrival experience. Throughout the space, CNC-routed wooden panels featuring Polynesian shark tooth motifs act as subtle zone demarcators. The private dining area features a sophisticated back-lit CNC perforated ceiling panel that reveals itself as guests approach.

Given the restaurant’s location in a heritage building, DRAWN. prioritized the preservation of existing architectural elements. “We carefully retained and enhanced the original floor tiles and decorative motifs, integrating them into our contemporary intervention,” the studio noted. The green lime plaster walls create a cave-like atmosphere, while the diagonal geometry of an existing staircase informed the design of a two-tiered wooden display unit with concealed lighting, further emphasizing the subterranean aesthetic.

My go to photographer @khoogj_ delivers once again.
I dig how he just gets me each and every time, and always manages to capture the essence of the design + space so well.
Latest @drawn_sg urban moment 📍@magpiesingapore

With my recent projects. I have been experimenting with ideas of “ornamentation’, and in this particular brief, it was all about channeling the client’s Polynesian roots and his love for dub and reggae. 🌊🌊
If you haven’t scoped the spot out yet, do so folks >> killer food and sound as well!

In between @darkerthanwax, dj-ing and @offtrack.sg things….✍️✍️✍️
Had a lot of fun experimenting with ideas of ornamentation and materiality in our latest @drawn_sg project, @magpiesingapore.
Channeling the client’s Polynesian roots into the design has been the key focus of this particular project, and our shared love for dub, reggae and lovers rock also provided a common thread, proving that once again, it all goes back to the music.
I have been very fortunate to be more selective with projects in the last two years or so, and it has allowed me and my team to have the headroom to execute them with clear intentions and care. After all, Design isn’t about churning out more meaningless Pinterest-fed spaces, or adorning a space with trendy designer pieces - it’s about limiting pre-conceived perceptions and crystalising a specific moment in space.
