One of my most highly anticipated releases! It says online: “Pixar’s Coco meets Neil Gaiman in this “terrifically eerie and atmospheric…a skillful mix of scary, sweet, and silly” (Booklist) middle grade novel about a girl whose quest to ensure her deceased grandmother is resting peacefully leads her to the magical and perilous kingdoms of the underworld.” Sounds INCREDIBLE! BEAUTIFUL cover by @brianthompsonart too.💜

Synopsis: Everyone in Whispering Pines knows their town is full of ghosts, but Helena Novak hasn’t seen a trace of her late grandmother, Babi. Helena and her best friend, Ben, spend most of their free time in the cemetery, yet no amount of gifts on Babi’s grave has lured her spirit out. But someone else has been paying attention.

Helena feels she’s being followed, and one day, all Babi’s grave gifts disappear. When Helena and Ben investigate, they find a secret door in a crypt that leads to the underworld itself. The sprawling subterranean world is a maze of eerie kingdoms, piercing castles, creepy forests, swirling seas, and crowded marketplaces full of unsavory characters. While the living can visit, if they get lost—or taken by the mysterious Nightmare—they won’t be able to leave. Despite the danger, Helena is set on finding her grandmother and seeing for herself that Babi is doing well in this strange place.

So when eccentric underworld guide Grumbones offers to help Helena and Ben find their way, they think it’s their lucky break. Sure, he looks like Santa’s skinny evil brother and some of the memento mori spilling out of his pockets look awfully familiar, but better a slightly suspicious helper than none at all…right?

These two pool tables have been at the heart of R&T since before we opened. They're beloved. They've been home to many a game, a flirtation, a romance, a friendship. Home to so many fundraising events. The perfect flat space to autograph jerseys, the perfect place to layout #polaroids with players, the background to incredible speaker panels, and home to more games between families than we can count. Swing by with your family, framily, friends, kids, dates, or meet someone new around them tonight.

🪦👻 Happy Halloween! And if a kiddo in your life is ready to seek out some spirits in the underworld—at the ostensibly safe distance of a middle grade novel—grab GRUMBONES by Jenn Bennett, out August of next year! It’s Pixar’s COCO meets Neil Gaiman, and told with the fun and warmth you expect from Jenn Bennett. ☠️💙 Hat tip to artist Brian Thompson for this fantastic cover art and brilliant character design! Thrilled that we could team up for this package design! #bookstagram #bookdesign #halloweenreads #middlegradefiction #grumbones #kidlit

Another of my most highly anticipated releases! It says online: “X-Men meets Spy Kids in the new middle-grade series from the New York Times bestselling author, Lisa McMann (The Unwanteds).” Sounds amazing! BEAUTIFUL cover by @brianthompsonart as well!💜

Synopsis: Fifteen years ago, eight supernatural criminals fled Estero City to make a new life in an isolated tropical hideout. Over time, seven of them disappeared without a trace, presumed captured or killed. And now, the remaining one has died.

Left behind to fend for themselves are the criminals’ five children, each with superpowers of their own: Birdie can communicate with animals. Brix has athletic abilities and can heal quickly. Tenner can swim like a fish and can see in the dark and hear from a distance. Seven’s skin camouflages to match whatever is around him. Cabot hasn’t shown signs of any unusual power—yet.

Then one day Birdie finds a map among her father’s things that leads to a secret stash. There is also a note:

Go to Estero, find your mother, and give her the map.

The five have lived their entire lives in isolation. What would it mean to follow the map to a strange world full of things they’ve only heard about, like cell phones, cars, and electricity? A world where, thanks to their parents, being supernatural is a crime?

On the left is a woman’s face in a frame, followed by a woman with a mask and some beetle-like creature. On the right is a gigantic frosty the snowman and a regular-sized 10 year old girl in front of it in overalls.

Hi friends, I would love your support for a fantastic group of powerful kids who are working to fight climate change on a global scale. My daughter and her friends started this effort last year, creating a website and initiatives to give voice to today’s youth. They just launched their account on Instagram. It’s called Generation Earth Movement, GEM for short. You can find them here: @genearthmovement As you know, gaining followers and likes and active participants really helps efforts like theirs. If you are invested in plants and animals and our earth’s well-being, could you please go over and give them a follow? Could you also take a few minutes to like, comment, and share their account with your friends and networks around the globe? As I spent the day yesterday in agony while my best friend’s town burned to the ground in Boulder County due to the effects of climate change and long-term drought and 110-mph winds, I am driven even more to help these kids try to turn our earth around. I hope you are, too. I believe in these kids—they are passionate, smart, engaged, committed, and so strong, and they will march on their local governments around the globe and head to DC to get their voices heard and help support better practices, from small-scale rewilding of our backyards to large-scale demands to reduce fossil fuel emissions and stop plastic from clogging up our oceans. Investing in them is a good first step for a better 2022. Beyond that, let’s work together to share our voices about the power of local movements and backyard gardens and sustainable living. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. 🙏🏼 🌍 @genearthmovement

And the thing I love about cross-country skiing is the near meditative state I get into while doing it. Clear air clears my mind.
