On my drive to Tucson I got to thinking about an article I read recently about mental health in academia and the good ol’ “publish or perish” culture, and naturally, I thought about all my scholar homies.

Hanitzsch et al. (2024) found widespread mental health concerns among scholars, with publication pressures, career insecurity, and structural conditions contributing to the problem. Then, 2025 came and I can only imagine it just….well, you were there.

So, naturally, I’m conducting a little informal wellness assessment. A safe space, for research and collective care.

Between grant deadlines, publications, institutional politics, emotional labor, budget cuts, and the never-ending expectation to do more with less…are yall alright?

Because burnout isn’t always a time-management problem. Sometimes it’s a systems problem dressed up as a professional advancement opportunity. Anywayyyyy, scholar homies, how’s your mental health? Like, FOR REAL?

USCHA 2026 reminded me why I chose this work and why I remain committed to it💋

Over five days, I had the opportunity to learn from people living with HIV, present for my community, see the AIDS Memorial Quilt, reconnect with colleagues from across the country, and witness the brilliance and joy that exist throughout the HIV community.

I left inspired, grateful, and full of new ideas. And because I will always be the Sexual Health Girly, I also talked about sex. A LOT. Of course I did. 😂
