Someone asked me recently if it's too late to fix a lifetime of mouth breathing. She was 54. My answer? Absolutely not. 💛

She'd already noticed it in herself: a narrower, slimmer arch, a high palate, and front teeth that sit a little more forward than she'd like. Those are classic signs that show up when someone has breathed through their mouth for years, sometimes since childhood. And here's what I want every parent and every adult to hear: this is 100% fixable, no matter your age.

The first step is simple, an airway assessment. If you're not near us in Texas, the IABDM has a directory to help you find someone qualified in your area. And if you are nearby, we'd love to have you come see us.

It's never too late to breathe better. DM us if you want to talk through what an assessment looks like. 🦷

If you or someone you know takes omeprazole for reflux, this one's worth knowing. 💛

It's a helpful medication, it really does reduce acid. But it also comes with a side effect that doesn't get talked about enough: dry mouth.

And here's the thing, if you're already dealing with reflux, your body is carrying a higher acid load to begin with, which means your teeth are sitting in that acid too. Add dry mouth on top of it, and your mouth loses some of its natural ability to protect itself.

The good news is there's a simple thing that helps a lot. Plain water, sipped throughout the day, keeps the mouth moisturized and gives it a little more support while it's working overtime.

Small habit, real difference. If your family is navigating reflux or dry mouth, DM us. I'm happy to talk through what else can help. 🦷

We had a patient come in recently with a story I want to share, because it says so much about why we do things the way we do. 💛

She'd already seen two different specialists. One said there was an infection. Another said there wasn't.

Can you imagine how confusing and frustrating that must have felt? A flat, 2D X-ray just wasn't giving anyone the full picture, especially since her tooth roots extended close to her sinus.

So we took a 3D X-ray instead. That extra dimension let us see exactly how close that root really was, and it made her extraction so much safer and more precise. When we removed the tooth, we did find a lima bean sized cyst at the root end.

We sent it to pathology and confirmed it. There really was an infection.

We can't treat what we can't see. That's the whole reason 3D imaging matters so much to us.

If you've ever felt unsure after getting mixed answers, DM us. Let's get you real clarity.

I sometimes wish I'd had this protocol available when I had my own mercury fillings removed years ago. It would have made a real difference for my body, especially my liver. 💛

That's exactly why we take safe removal so seriously here. When we remove a mercury filling, our team wears NIOSH certified respirators, because mercury vapor is nothing to take lightly. We use dedicated suction close to the tooth plus additional suction in the room, all working together to protect you and protect our team while the filling comes out.

This is the Protect Protocol in action. It's not extra, it's essential. If your family has mercury fillings and you've been wondering what safe removal actually looks like, I want you to feel informed, not scared.

DM us if you have questions. I'm always happy to walk you through it. 🦷

We are so proud of our very own Dr. Caroline Jones 🎉

Dr. Jones was recently inducted as a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Fellowship isn't something a dentist can apply for. It comes by invitation only, after a colleague nominates you and a board of peers reviews your years of work, your character, and the way you show up for your community.

Only about 3% of dentists in the United States are offered this honor 🦷

Those of us who get to work beside her every day already know why she was chosen. It's in the extra time she gives every patient, the questions she always makes room for, and the care she brings into every single appointment. The ICD's values are integrity, leadership and service, and honestly, that reads like a description of how she practices.

Dr. Jones can now proudly add FICD after her name 💛

Please join us in congratulating her in the comments below 👇

I was doing some research recently and honestly, this one floored me. 😳

Materials that were considered totally normal in dentistry were only taken off the recommended list a lot more recently than you'd think. One that stood out to me was arsenic trioxide. Decades ago, before local anesthesia even existed, dentists used it to numb a live nerve inside the tooth. They'd open the tooth and place arsenic directly on it to quiet the pain.

I share this not to scare you, but because it's a good reminder of how far we've come, and why it matters so much to know what's actually being used in your child's mouth today. What was standard once isn't always safe, and what's standard now deserves the same kind of questions.

If you've ever wondered what materials we use and why, DM us. I love talking through this stuff. 🦷

If your kid brushes every single night and still gets cavities, I want you to hear this. 🦷

It's not a brushing problem. It's an environment problem.

Every time your child eats or sips something, even something "healthy," their mouth opens what we call an acid window. That's the stretch of time after eating when the mouth is acidic and the teeth are vulnerable. Grazing all day, snacking between meals, sipping juice for hours, all of that keeps that window open way longer than it needs to be.

In wellness dentistry, we don't just treat what we see. We ask why it's happening in the first place. Sometimes the answer isn't a better toothbrush. It's rethinking the rhythm of the day.

If this is hitting home, DM us. Let's talk through what's actually going on in your child's mouth. 💛

There are certain partnerships that remind us exactly why Avia Collective exists.

Meet Dr. Caroline Jones, DMD, a wellness-focused dentist with three decades of clinical experience and the visionary behind the Beyond the Practice Retreat.

Caroline knows firsthand what a career in dentistry can ask of a woman: precision, responsibility, endurance, care for everyone sitting in front of you, and often very little space to ask what you need.

Her vision was to create something different.

A space for women dentists to step outside the operatory, exhale, reconnect with themselves and consider a bigger question:
What do I want my life to look like from here?

Together, we’re bringing that vision to life through Beyond the Practice, an intimate seven-day immersion on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

There will be beautiful food, adventure, sound healing, movement, ocean air and plenty of space to simply be, but underneath all of it is something deeper:

The opportunity to intentionally design a life that feels as good to live as it looks from the outside.

This is the kind of partnership we love at Avia.

Our hosts bring their expertise, their communities and the reason the experience needs to exist.

We help translate that vision into place, flow, logistics, meaningful moments and an experience their guests will remember long after they return home.

We’re so excited to be creating this one alongside you, Caroline. 🤍

This is a grade 4 tongue tie, quite severe, with a heart-shaped tongue and thick, tight restriction preventing the tongue from lifting. 🤍

This little patient benefited from myofunctional therapy first, home exercises paired with appointments, followed by a laser tongue release. Real progress happens with the right sequence of care. ✨💛

Mouth breathing isn't a bad habit, it's compensation. 🤍

It happens when your nose isn't moving enough air, your tongue isn't resting properly, or your airway narrows during sleep. Test your nasal breathing while awake, if you can't, that's your answer, and taping isn't the fix.

We recommend an airway evaluation, sleep study, and often myofunctional therapy to address the root cause. ✨💛

If your child breathes through their mouth, the tongue drops low, and that reshapes the jaw over time. 🤍

A narrow palate means less room for teeth and a smaller airway behind it, leading to grinding, snoring, or trouble getting enough air.

Notice your child walking around with their mouth open? Check if they can breathe through their nose. Snoring or audible breathing during sleep is a sign worth having evaluated. ✨💛

This is one of the questions most people are afraid to ask out loud: are my silver fillings making me sick? 🤍

I'll answer it straight, from personal experience too. What's established: amalgam is about half mercury, and it does release vapor, more with chewing, grinding, or hot drinks. ✨💛
