We started filming Vita Nova in November last year. Then, from January to July this year, we continued filming off and on until we finished.

Two of these shoots occurred right before some pivotal Chiefs games (including the Super Bowl)--Keenan, Shelby, Melanie, Jordan, and I considered it good luck both times.

Vita Nova is a college comedy and a ghost story all in one. Will (Keenan Capps) is a nervous freshman looking to blend in and stay invisible...yeah, that's not gonna happen--especially now that his mind is occupied by a ghost girl (voiced by Liz Hackworth) who can't help but give advice. Hijinks ensue, but Will learns something about himself at the same time.

We don't have a final film yet--but when we do, I think I'll host my own screenings for it in 2024 instead of wait for festivals in 2025. (We don't need festivals telling us how awesome we are, do we?) Looking at rough edits for it, this is definitely one of the most unique films I ever made--very strange and zany but with psychological dramatic elements and memorable characters. And I think it's going to be great!

Here's a making-of video for one of my new feature films: Vita Nova, one of the strangest films I think I'll ever make--and I love it!

In this video, I, as well as actors @cappskeenan, @lizzi_leigh, @melanie_grantham, and @katiejotrent, talk about the film, which is a fantasy-dramedy about a college freshman getting literal spiritual help during the midterm.

Also starring @shelbydominguez__, @wideablake, @realjordee, @dreadover, @thekatieforce, @jai_is_jai, @mvp_myers, and @jordan.lanio (with voiceover cameos by @nickgivechi and @christeanoel).

This one has a lot of work to be done in post--but when it's all done, it's going to be something special.

Vita Nova is a remake of something I did a long time ago, when I was 18 (and making films with a Flip video camera). I did what I could then--I was happy to do with it what I can now. But even with that said, making this film made me feel like a kid again.

There's so much to this film--it's a college comedy, it's a ghost story, it's a Spielbergian fable, it's an indie dramedy, it's Spike Jonze's Her, it's...probably the strangest film I'll ever make (I mean, in my post-college days). So I'm gonna make it damn good in editing.

Once again, I have to give a shout-out to everyone in the cast. First and foremost is Keenan Capps, who has to carry this film. When he's not interacting with the other actors, he's by himself talking to a disembodied voice in his head (usually me or Kelly off-camera). And he's so likable, like a young John Cusack or a young Shia LaBeouf--his energy, his comedic timing, and even his grounded nature help make the film come alive. (In other words, Keenan Capps IS this film.)

Liz Hackworth, the rising star who's also in Funny Kind Crazy Clever, is the voice and she does well at conveying emotions through voiceover dialogue. (During sound-recording, she would react to footage of Keenan or me pretending to be Keenan.)

And the rest of the cast, which includes Katie Rohlfing and Melanie Paige Grantham among many others, add to the charm and humor of this strange and unusual tale about a nervous kid learning to live a life he won't regret.

Yeah, I'm cheating again, giving a shout-out to FIVE actors at once--BUT all five of these actors did great work in Vita Nova!

They are: Andrea Dover, Katie Force, Jai Lindsey, Jordan Lanio, and Preston Myers. In Vita Nova, they play the friends of a recently deceased college girl--protagonist Will (Keenan Capps) is communicating with her ghost and he decides to go and see them so the ghost can give one last goodbye (though, they don't know it).

Andrea and Katie have a good comic rhythm together, playing Greta and Sadie, who are preparing for their late friend's memorial service. They don't know who this stranger (Will) is--but thankfully, Glen (Jai) can vouch for him.

Jai is probably destined to be the film's standout as Glen. His laidback, relaxed demeanor, which contrasts with his party-guy dialogue, crossed with his memorable gator wardrobe makes him very memorable--I dare you to see this film and not wish to see more of him!

As for the other two--Jordan gives a testy but friendly vibe as Allie, and Preston is hilarious as a cocky jock named Kevin who gets his comeuppance (after being the cause of Will's embarrassment early on) and simply moves along.

Also, fun fact: it was Preston's idea for Will to meet them at a disc-golf area instead of a bowling alley (too much to ask for, given our non-budget), a swimming pool (too much of an echo at an indoor pool), or a bonfire (just too much safety to keep in mind).

The teaser trailer for VITA NOVA! (Only in one of my films will you see a ketchup comedy gag and a ghostly voice in the same environment!) Enjoy! :)
