BEAUTIFUL DAYS '26

Rave Against the Machine: The law couldn’t defeat the Second Summer of Love.

Rave music pushed social and musical boundaries as a generation crystallised around a shared love of ecstasy and booming soundsystems. That’s our focus in this episode of Sounds from The Balcony.

Whether it’s @theprodigyofficial or @orbital, @dreadzonemusic or @aguycalledgerald, rave music has outlived halcyon days in the Hacienda and field days on the outskirts of the M25. And the counterculture it represents continues to thrive to this day, as we will see in our next episode… @blackcountrybeats 😉

This all came in spite of the draconian Criminal Justice Act 1994 which legislated to stop gatherings of 20 or more people where a “succession of repetitive beats” were played.

The Act was the latest in a string of reforms to suppress the freedoms of the working class and the marginalised. Another attempt of reactionary Conservative governments, goaded by the right-wing tabloid press whipping up moral panic, to curb non-conformist countercultures.

Thankfully, like with hippies in the ‘60s and punks in the ‘70s, the divide-and-rule tactics failed to have the desired effect. In fact, they only emboldened us ✊

We dedicate this episode to DJ Randall, a leading light of the rave scene who was instrumental to the rise of jungle drum n bass. Rest in power @ranstar88.

Do check out Episode 5 of @balconysoundspodcast and the accompanying article via the links in our bio.

Enjoy!
