*That* Aki Tsuyuko tape now on the site. (Locals can order for local pick up or DM @seasonal_workaround to pick up at @deepthoughtsrecordshop) 𝗔𝗸𝗶 𝗧𝘀𝘂𝘆𝘂𝗸𝗼 Stranger in the Night Self-released Japan, 2026 Cassette Folkloric lo-fi synth minimalism by the great Aki Tsuyuko, perhaps her most charming & beguiling release yet. The tape opens just perfectly with twinkling early-VHS stardust and meanders companionably through nine unified but distinct scenes from there, layering in naive vocals & the guitar of Ippei Matsui—who is also the artist responsible for that great little guy on the cover. Easy to see why folks are so enthused about this. Comes with paper download code.

Stunningly beautiful new cassette from Aki Tsuyuko, now in stock at the shop and available for mail order (link in stories). Aki’s music has been a personal favorite of mine (Jed, that is) since I stumbled upon on her work in the late 90s. Rarely has an artist, this many years into their musical career, continued to delight and surprise with each release, but here we are with what possibly be her finest moment yet, “Stranger In the Night.” A perfect respite from this demonic world we’re forced to live in. It doesn’t get any better.

🌝 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘐𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘬𝘪 𝘛𝘴𝘶𝘺𝘶𝘬𝘰 🌝 “Stranger” appeared suddenly this winter, on the day of Ippei Matsui’s solo exhibition in Seoul. Self-released by Aki Tsuyuko, these nine compositions - presented as individual scenes - seem to drift down from a cloud, floating directly into the hearts of those who listen, and then return delicately back up into the sky. Aki’s keyboard arrangements have a very special way of warping time, echoing into moments of memory and transporting the listener across space - and this experience is amplified by the beautiful fuzzy haze of Ippei Matsui’s guitar, accompanying the delicate dream tones of Aki’s keyboard playing throughout. Each piece is suspended in an air of the evening - floating light-as-air notes seem to tweet like a bird in the twilight, as deep organ tones pull the listener deeper into the night, each composition slowly emerging from the gloaming. The works on “Stranger” quickly became some of our favorites from Aki’s ouvre, and it is a beautiful joy to be treated to her singing on these new compositions as well. We’re certain that “Stranger” will make its way into your heart <3 We’re grateful to be carrying and handling US distribution for this special self-released cassette by Aki Tsuyuko - including lovely risograph artwork by Ippei Matsui and a digital download code - available now in our webshop and for wholesale orders (shops please reach out for more information).
