“Devil”- Music Video A word from the DP @qutaps In 2023 I DP’d a music video at Gold Field Ghost Town aiming for a gritty, raw aesthetic that aligned with the song’s dark, chaotic energy. The lyrics paint a picture of inner conflict and destruction, and I wanted the visuals to reflect that energy. To achieve this, I chose the ARRI Alexa 35 paired with TLS Cooke Speed Panchros; vintage lenses that date back to the 1930s. Their slightly lower contrast profile, organic warmth, colorful orbs and painterly streak like veiling flares that bloom around the highlights brought a subtle, romantic imperfection mirroring the song’s themes of temptation and turmoil. The Alexa 35’s G733 Nostalgic texture profile gave me that natural grain, filmic look straight out of camera. I shot this mostly handheld using the Easyrig Vario 5 with the Serene Arm for the reason of making the viewers feel closer and emotionally charged for an immersive experience into the artists performance. I worked closely with my first, Phuc Tran to experiment with moments of intentional blur to produce an ethereal, hazy effect that reinforced the song’s haunting, almost feverish tone. These choices weren’t about making the video look polished or clean but rather about embracing imperfection in a way that strengthened the impact of the music.
