🍪 Christmas cookies tray!

1. Chocolate chip cookie recipe from Jacques Torres @nytcooking which is always a hit
2. Chocolate crinkle cookies! A new addition from last year and a keeper

4. Peppermint brownies, used the crinkle top brownies recipe from @halfbakedharvest and topped with the chocolate peppermint glaze from @nytcooking peppermint brownie recipe
5. Oatmeal raisin cookies: my 1st time making them, used the recipe on the @sunmaid bag and it’s a keeper!

As a gastroenterologist, I am asked about dieting all the time. Anything can be eaten in moderation. The cookies were delicious and worth every single calorie. That being said, I don’t eat multiple cookies every single day…probably just for the next week!

We already know that women are 2/3 more likely than men to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.

Now new data presented at this year’s @alzassociation international conference adds another piece of the puzzle as to why.
🌼
Women who’ve had pregnancies complicated by high blood pressure were found to have increased risk for all dementias later in life, especially vascular dementia.
🌺
This is important because HDP complicates 1 in 7 deliveries. And, we already have proven strategies to reduce dementia risk by addressing heart health.

🔖If you have a history of gestational hypertension, consider it a sign to take extra special care of your brain:
✔️exercise regularly (150 or more minutes a week)
✔️don’t smoke
✔️maintain a healthy weight
✔️keep BP under 120
✔️screen for diabetes and high cholesterol (LDL) and get those numbers down
✔️practice whatever form of stress mitigation works for you: meditation, mindfulness, journaling, breathing, spending time with people you love

July is National Minority Mental Health awareness month. There are so many ways we can improve our mental health and some of those tools are hidden in plain site. Apple Watch has made it easy for us to incorporate mindfulness into our daily routine. Deep breathing can help keep you calm during moments of anxiety and stress and is also something that you can do daily to center yourself to start your day and end your day. This practice helps improve clarity and slows your heart rate. This is just one of the many ways we can take care of our mental health.

What other aspects of mindfulness do you practice?

When did learning become a chore? When did we abandon the sheer excitement of sitting down to shark week?

Medicine should be interesting, engaging, thought provoking, awe inspiring.

It’s just just that it should be enjoyable there’s also some scientific evidence that we learn better when we’re having sun. When we are engaged and having fun we turn on their effective information processing and long term memory storage and the information is retained.

A study in the journal, College Teaching, found that we could recall a statistics lecture more easily when the lecturer added jokes about relevant topics.

Crowdsourcing for feedback. Working on my green thumb, started seedlings for the first time ever! Aside from the herbs in my @officialaerogarden, I believe I also grew basil, snap peas, carrots, various types of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini and green onions.
