It’s that time of the year when we remove out our umbrellas and spend our evenings sipping on some warm masala tea. We might experience an occasional soak in the rain, but for strays who are devoid of any shelter, the rainy season is known to be a time of diseases, sickness, and lack of food.
We resort to staying inside our homes during a heavy downpour, but what about those souls on the street? We find them cowering and possibly, trembling, under cars or other vehicles. Here is an easy and quick guide on how you can give our community animals instant relief from the rains,

● CHECK UNDER YOUR VEHICLES:
Before heading out, always make sure you double-check for any little furry friend hiding and taking shelter under your vehicle. Cats are known to take refuge in small spaces, so always take a look at your car’s exhaust pipes and the hood.

● PROVIDE SHELTER:
Give the drenched strays a relief by opening your doors to them. Allow them to stay inside your building compounds, staircase areas, or to a higher ground. However, if you’re not comfortable with letting them in, you can make a temporary shelter using cardboard boxes around areas where strays are usually seen. Install a makeshift shed in your residential area, public parks, or in your locality by taking the help of other people. You may add a few old blankets or sacks to help them remain warm and dry.

● A WARM MEAL:
Just giving strays a shelter and a few belly rubs surely isn’t enough. You can either head out to feed strays as soon as it stops raining or keep the food near your temporary shelters, below balconies, or any dry places a stray might be found in. If you wish, you can either purchase food from a pet store or resort to boiled foods like rice, eggs, and meat. Always make sure to provide a bowl containing clean, fresh water along with the food. Strays can safely drink water from the rain, which is collected in puddles, which is a big misconception people might have. One big warm meal after a heavy downpour goes a long way!

Tips for Helping Animals Survive the Summer Heat

●Keep dog companions indoors: Unlike humans, dogs can sweat only through their footpads, and they cool themselves by panting. High temperatures can cause them heat stress and physical injuries – including brain damage – and can even result in death.

●Provide animals with water when they’re outdoors: Place mud pots filled with cool, clean water outside your home8 or in places where there are community or working animals. Inexpensive mud pots will help keep the water cool and won’t tip over.

●Give working animals a break: Ask owners of bullocks, ponies, and donkeys to give the animals a rest in the shade, especially during the heat of the afternoon, and help the animals cool off by gently spraying water on them. Frequently offer them fresh drinking water and green fodder.

●If you find an animal with heat exhaustion or stroke, take action: Laboured breathing and abnormal head movements are indications of heat exhaustion or stroke. Pour lots of water at room temperature on the animals’ body to cool them down, wipe them with a wet towel, and call a veterinarian to the site or transport the animal to the nearest veterinary facility.

●Stay alert and save a life: Keep an eye on all the animals you see outdoors. Make sure that they have adequate water and shelter. If you find an animal in distress, contact humane authorities right away and give the animal water for immediate relief. Contact Drogo Organization if you need advice or a referral to a local animal-welfare organisation or veterinarian. Do not leave the animal’s side before help arrives.

●Provide birds with water: Place bowls of water on window sills, on balconies, on terraces, and in gardens. Change the water regularly.

●Give animals a treat: Feeding working animals fruit and vegetables could be a good treat for them, as they are sweet and help them rehydrate.

The festival of playing colours, Holi is almost here and we can sense the excitement around already. While today is Holika Dahan, everyone will be indulging in a messy play of colours and water tomorrow. Children especially have already started getting out their pichkaris, water balloons and colours, enjoying splashing their friends already. But many times we also see people involving stray animals or their pets in the festival. It is not just the kids but even elders take gulaal and throw it on the stray dogs. It may seem fun but it is far from any fun to these furry animals. Not just the dogs and cats, all kinds of animals should be kept away from the colours.

We wish you a very happy and colorful Holi to you and your family.Let the colours of Holi spread the message of peace and Happiness. May this festival spread peace, prosperity, happiness and good health. We wish that this year brings lots of happiness for you.🥰🐾
