That’s a wrap on Season 3 of #TwistedMetal.

This has been one the hardest—and most rewarding—projects I’ve ever been a part of. I could not be more proud of what we accomplished together.

We raced cars. We blew shit up. We laughed A LOT (and cried). We bled (some of us), lost sleep, pushed ourselves to the limit—and somehow loved every minute of it.

This season was filled with so many familiar faces, along with some incredible new ones. To this amazing cast and crew: I love you all. The Toronto artists and technicians once again overachieved at every turn. You constantly amazed me, solved impossible problems, and somehow kept smiling through it all. You are the best.

And to Camera, Grip & Electric—you know who you are—thank you isn’t enough. Your talent, hard work, patience and support made it possible for us to create some truly amazing images again this year. I’m incredibly proud of what we made together.

@anthonymackie —My Man! Thank you for the constant positive attitude, the laughs, and the friendship.

@stephaniebeatriz You bring it every single scene, and maintain such grace and professionalism in this nutty, chaotic world of Twisted Metal.

Thank you @reed_dave for allowing me to join the ride with you.

Marc David Alpert, thank you for being the wizard that held made it possible.

My old friend director/producer @jmwatson23, what is there left to say? Your leadership, comedic brilliance, attention to story, and relentlessly positive attitude are a huge part of why I love doing this job. This season would have been a hell of a lot more challenging without you. I’m so grateful we got the opportunity to collaborate again—and to rock out during our time off. I can’t wait for the next adventure. I’d go anywhere with you, my brother.

A huge thank you to @keslowcamera @jimmyteevan for once again providing spectacular support.

To everyone who poured their heart into this season: THANK YOU. We made something special.

I had some amazing crew help capture the ice work for Finding Her Edge. Jason Gosbee and Harper Forbes built a sled to push the cast and camera around on, Chris Bacik did incredible drone work to follow the doubles and Brad Hruboska’s steadicam got me the intimate beats before the routines. #findingheredge #behindthescenes #figureskating #cinematography #tvproduction #filmmaking #steadicam

Sort Of S2 - 2022

This post is a bit of a throwback, but I wanted to share a breakdown of the most ambitious VFX work we tackled in the series: the last scene of Season 2, Episode 1, which depicts Sabi and Olympia flying drones in the park.

After the initial scout, we knew we were going to use CGI drones in a few shots to avoid the complications of shooting real ones. As things progressed, we realized we were going to shoot a massive wide for the end, and in order to have it match coverage, we needed lights in shot that would later need painting out. Normally that would be simple enough, but add the twist ~ the shot would be made by a drone that couldn't repeat move, through a park with trees, and our location was in fact a live park where we didn't have street lockup or BG continuity.

In the end we shot a few takes at roughly the same speed until performance was locked. Then we pulled the lights directly behind cast, shut off the giant bounce in the foreground, and re-shot a (semi)-clean plate at about the same angle and speed. Ideally, we would have done this a few times at various speeds to pick and choose the best plates, but we were behind schedule and I had to be confident we had a usable take. @droneunit667 did a great job getting the bird relatively close to the select, and we committed to the second attempt.

In post, we re-timed and distorted the clean plate to match the select as closely as possible. With the street and park being live, we added a CGI tree to cover the visible seams. We tracked and composited the CGI drones on top of the paintout work. And then at the very end, we needed to paint out significant graffiti, billboards, and corporate logos. All in, the final shot was more like ten shots in one. It took us roughly two weeks to complete the scene, but I am thrilled with how it turned out. It closed out the first episode in such an epic way!

Big shout outs to @irwincine for only giving me a few minor heart attacks about where to put the lights—in the end it was perfect.

Swipe right to see the whole scene in situ, as well as the @arri Alexa Mini LF rigged onto a sweet octocopter.
