👨‍🍳🍷Tyranny or tasting menu? In this season’s Bon Vivant column, @justinsjlo explores why chef-driven tasting menus remain a tough sell in Virginia — and what it says about our independent streak (and apparently our love of burgers). 🍔

“Maybe it’s no coincidence, considering our state flag prominently depicted the Roman goddess of virtue triumphing over a fallen tyrant, above the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis,” Lo writes. “Having others tell us what to do is not the Virginia way. And yet submission is the very premise of a chef’s tasting experience.”

Chefs from @adrift_va on the Northern Neck, @sumac_va at @pendruidbrewing in Sperryville, @earlymountain in Madison, and @maudeandthebear in Staunton weigh in with candid insight on ego, exposure, and culinary faith.

Read the full piece in the summer issue of en forme or online at enformeva.com.

A few moments from the last 30.

Slipped over to the @tidesinn to see what @chefkyleperkins is up to. Couldn’t be more pleased to see cobia on the menu.

Had a time eating every lobster.

Popped up to Chicago for some fun awards and did a round at @gus_sipanddip — that’s a sandwich to be proud of right there.

@adrift_va is one of the best restaurants in Virginia. You will never be able to convince me otherwise (and not to be a d*ck, but I wrote that early and first).

To no one’s surprise, @heritagerva is still amazing.

@yellowumbrellaprovisions has Graz cookies now. So there’s that fun fact for you.

I’m living my #1, A+, best life. I’m catching my own crab and pulling in citation drum.

the month of merry + bright 🎄🔥 ♥️

framily meals
family traditions
so many lights
so many trees
too many pieces
and a yoga mat or two

The end of the year is this beautiful juxtaposition of togetherness and withdrawal. The nature we’re made of grows cold and dark, so we light up the nights to warm each other just as hibernation calls. This week is the weirdest and best of all. I hope you can do less. I hope you can embrace your pajamas as daywear. I hope the in-between upside-down finds you quietly in a seed state with Love wrapped tight around.

Last weekend feels a million lifetimes ago, but I am still glowing from our stay @tidesinn, a charming dog-friendly waterfront hotel in Northern Neck, Virginia. We all loved its new restaurant, Salt & Meadow, many creature comforts, and natural beauty, including stunning sunrises and sunsets. One afternoon we went out with their resident ecologist, Will, to learn about their oyster restoration project, which ended with us shucking a couple dozen fire-baked bivalves that @io_martell and I knocked back while looking out over Carter’s Creek.

That evening, we popped over to @adrift_va by @drosennk for a wonderful dinner that included “Slurpies” with @steamboatwharfoyster, smoked trout roe, blood orange sherbet, pickled watermelon rind, and basil oil. Creamy, dreamy, deliciously zesty.

If you feel like you need to get away and recharge, I cannot recommend this getaway enough.

Shout out to @moor_va and @adrift_va for making entertaining so easy! The pimento cheese by @drosennk deserves a center spot on your cheese board. 😍 The wine selection is fantastic and @ramble.on.roses can make suggestions perfect for your meal. 🍷 all the things: crackers, baguettes, sea salt flakes to sprinkle on your butter, pimento cheese, wine and more. #whitestoneva #shoplocal
