On the road with Nile Rodgers & CHIC 📸🕺🪩

It still feels surreal. Back in April, I opened an email that would end up taking me on the road with Nile Rodgers & CHIC. Seven weeks, tens of thousands of images, countless flights, late nights and early mornings later… it’s safe to say this is one I’ll remember for a very long time.

From Nile and the band to the incredible crew and team behind the tour, it was an absolute pleasure to be part of it this summer. Travelling through Europe and across the UK, photographing festivals, backstage moments and everything in between - often running on very little sleep, but loving every minute of it.

I’m excited to finally share some of my favourite frames and moments from the road. A small collection of memories from a pretty unforgettable chapter! 🪩

A BLUE PLAQUE FOR SISTER ROSETTA THARPE - PLAQUE NO.3

This is Manchester’s greatest music story. The Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll & the original soul sister performed in the city of Manchester, England.

On May 7 1964, The Blues and Gospel Train Special was filmed for Granada TV in
Manchester in the UK. The programme’s producer Johnnie Hamp is a lover of blues music and brings excitement to the city's teens by staging this groundbreaking music show.

The audience were asked to arrive at Central Station at 7.30pm prompt wearing casual gear, denim and sweaters to board the train that would travel to the disused Wilbraham Road disused train station in Chorlton-cum-Hardy.

Aboard the train was Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Rev Gary Davis, Cousin Joe Pleasants, Brownie McGhee,
Sonny Terry, Otis Span and Muddy Waters.

As she arrived for the concert the rain came down and she sang “Didn’t It Rain, Children.”

My quest for the plaque has been supported by the wonderful Johnnie who backed my vision for
the plaque for Rosetta to be installed at the site of Central Station.

This has taken too long to come to fruition - Sister Rosetta was the true architect of rock ‘n’ roll music and guitar playing as we know it today. A hugely popular
performer in gospel and popular music circles.

THIS IS THE FIRST COMMEMORATION OF SISTER ROSETTA IN THE UK..
Thanks to all those who supported my wish for this to happen - the musicians and actors around the world who gave their vocal support
Thanks to the women in music who encouraged me to keep going because they know! and to all the music creatives who grew to understand her legacy and encouraged me to keep going.
Thank you to the wonderful team at Junction and Manchester Central who believed in acknowledging this site’s wonderful heritage.

Thanks to @viewfromalison @MDMarchive, to all the musicans and poets who performed at the unveiling ceremony and to all my peeps who travelled to Manchester.

Also thank you to Bev Craig and Dave Moutrey, and Carol for crafting a beautiful curtain. The little things are the big tings.
