Had such a beautiful time playing at The Gatesworth this past weekend. 🎹

It’s always special getting to make music with my brother from another mother, Nick Savage. When I first moved to St. Louis, Nick and I were the young cats trying to sneak into clubs just to hear the greats play — and one of those greats was the legendary Jeff Anderson.

So getting to stand on the bandstand all these years later with Nick AND Jeff? That’s a full-circle moment right there.

We played a bunch of familiar standards, and there was something really sweet about performing for a community of listeners who were truly engaged, present, and not shy about letting us know they were enjoying the experience.

It also took me back to being a little kid dreaming about one day being able to sit at a piano and really play jazz. Sometimes you get so busy chasing the next thing that you forget you’re already living inside one of those childhood dreams.

And here’s something I think we could all use a little more of right now… L-O-V-E. ❤️

A little snippet from our rendition of the classic made famous by Nat “King” Cole.

Grateful for the music, the friendships, the listeners, and the full-circle moments. 🎶

Honored tonight to be a part of “Selebre Kilti” Celebrating Haitian Culture. This was a beautiful fundraiser event put together by @medsfoodforkids . Please learn more about them at www.mfkhaiti.org They asked me for a jazz group at the start of the evening. I put together a jazz septet, but I added Haitian Kompa music feel with jazz standards. The guys in the band played wonderfully. When I lived in Miami, I used to tour with the legendary Haitian band called Magnum Band to Haiti, Paris, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. I learned a lot about music from the leader of the band Dadou Pasquet @therealdadou , who passed away last November. I played some trombone tonight, but I also played percussion. I hung in there playing percussion, but Claude “Tico” Pasquet (drummer of Magnum Band) would have laughed at me. There was also tonight an excellent Haitian percussion and dance group from Boston called “Ansanm Ansanm”, directed by Jean Appolon Expressions.
