Calvet Fleurie 2023 • Red, the colour of romance, has many reaching for similarly hued wines on Valentines day. If you want a red and if flowers were acquired then perhaps serve a Cru Beaujolais by the name of Fleurie. These wines are smooth, vibrant and beautifully floral so if the roses are red, they will match the wine in both aroma and colour. For food, keep it simple but use good ingredients so you’re not in the kitchen all night. Duck ragu with Linguine - go on, have a “Lady and The Tramp” moment - share a strand of pasta until you lock lips. • Fleurie AOC

Maturation - 10 months - SS • Iris, rose and a whiff of violet perfume the collection of red fruit at the core of this wine - it’s medium ruby colour is reflected in the aromas of strawberry, red plum and currant, plus raspberry. The nose, medium (+) intensity, teases subtle complexity as its fruit ranges from fresh to freeze dried strawberry and dried cranberry. Acidity is bright, medium (+), and the texture is gorgeously ethereal. Silky tannins float across the tongue - at medium (-), they support the supple and similarly weighted body. Underlining the lighter-toned fruit is a muted earthy quality, along with murmurs of black cherry, berry and orange peel. With medium (+) flavour intensity and similar length, the finish reminds me a particular type of sweetly-scented, citrussy, crimson coloured rose.
