The majority of funds I’m raising for my new film will go towards compensating the small crew and cast I am working with. The piece lives in the space between art and film–a complex one to navigate in terms of the economics of production, exhibition, and distribution. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣I’m not interested in making work that follows the Sundance2Netflix model and I have issues with the ways in which virtue/identity are trafficked in non-profit and government-funded project grants. How else do you fund something outside the mainstream and pay people fairly? Court a millionaire at a dinner party and pray that they make your dream come true? 😂🤪😭. The limited edition print sale I’m having is an experiment in an alternate mode of funding – one which does not rely on one problematic board of trustees, one billionaire, one network. ⁣ ⁣The purchase of a limited edition print supports a community of artists working on it. Thank you to @justine4good and @sarahszestudio for inspiring this idea. 🔗 in bio!

Belated Birthday Dump: A few weeks ago, I started my 28th year grieving a few familial losses with lots of love and support from my community. Attempting to remember that it’s important to hold both joy and grief simultaneously. In light of that here are a few photos from a very sweet picnic and moments of celebration with friends and family. I hope you’re all well and holding space for whatever you’re feeling both bad and good. Xx

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Walk-ins are welcome. LA-based independent filmmaker and artist 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗧𝘆𝘀𝗼𝗻 has a documentary filmmaking practice. His work has interrogated subjects such as carceral firefighting, conflict minerals, and the economies surrounding active volcanoes. Most recently his exploration has taken a turn to narrative filmmaking to explore the medium of documentary itself. THE REGISTRY (originally commissioned by @sheffdocfest and most recently screened virtually by @memory.is) is an elliptically structured psychological horror that explores some of the ethical concerns of non-fiction: the afterlives of images of war and their fictional representation, tokenization of stories and subjects by the film industry, and the potential dilemmas of the commercialization of stock footage. For this month’s Shadow Kitchen we will dive into an exploration of documentary with Alex Tyson, watching excerpts of his work and furthering this exploration in an “artist talk” (of sorts). PREMIERE: Alex Tyson's THE REGISTRY Free on MEMORY.IS (link in bio) Highly recommend this complex short film. It's meditative, curious, beautifully shot, funny with hits of docu-realism. A completely contemporary blend of self-reflexive form, social commentary and politics. Plus we have great bonus material: listen to the score by @ben_babbitt_ and read an essay by director @alextyson_ unpacking the film. - The Registry is a new short film by Los Angeles-based artist and independent filmmaker Alex Tyson, originally commissioned by Sheffield DocFest as a two-channel installation. An evolution from his past works of formally innovative documentary film, The Registry is the artist’s first narrative work, an elliptical, layered psychological horror that brings together multiple storylines which intersect in complex ways. Embedded within these narrative threads are topics salient to the documentary/non-fiction field: the afterlives of images of war and their fictional representation; the potential tokenization of subjects, stories, and makers by the industry; and the ethical dilemmas arising from the commercialization of the stock footage market. These topics are related subtly through Tyson’s own cinematography, editing, and sound design –always unconventional and off-kilter– and through documentary footage woven throughout the film's fictional narrative. – @htshell | Curator, @sheffdocfest

Due to the current wave of COVID preventing an in-person January program, we are collaborating with Kino Quarantine - a filmmakers’ discussion group that started virtually during the pandemic specifically to keep the community going throughout lockdown. Join us for a curated group screening where we’ll enjoy a program of shorts and lively discussion. Hope to see your disembodied faces in the grid! “The Songs of Ghosts Seep Through the Cracks in the Drywall” Featuring: “Mountain Lodge” - Dir. Jordan Wong (@okjordanwong) “Golden Jubilee” - Dir. Suneil Sanzgiri (@suneil_sanzgiri) “Rumi & His Roses” - Dir. Navid Sinaki (@navidsinaki) “Home Video (Made In Thai Town)” - Dir. Sompot Chidgasornpongse (Boat) This program brings together four voices in cinema who live between two worlds - one of their own communities that pits subjects against an unbroken continuation of colonialism vs the technocratic utopia commodified on their surrounding digital screens. Together they share a yearning for a way to concretize, memorialize, or archive deeply universal human experiences like love, lineage and horror despite the dense network of constraints imposed upon our modes of expression via borders, technological access, historical erasures, municipal development initiatives, extractive industries, and late capitalist internet hijinks. Wednesday, 01/12/21 8PM PST Show Please RSVP for Zoom & Screening links at shadowkitchenla@gmail.com
