From June 12 to 14, 2024, Centre for Humanitarian Data @un_ocha held its first-ever Humanitarian Data Forum in The Hague. This forum was an opportunity to discuss and reimagine the future of humanitarian data and the best ways to progress in strengthening humanitarian response. Congratulations on ten years of HDX! (Follow humdata on X).

It was also an opportunity to share @dtm_iom recently launched application programming interface (API). This API in collab with @microsoft @odi.global @ukgovofficial @usaidsaveslives provides access to academia, the humanitarian community, government, media, and non-governmental organisations to use the data collected by DTM.

DTM’s API accelerates the secure sharing of internal displacement data, simplifies access, supports better assistance to people on the move, and helps create a stronger, data-driven UN.

The eighth session of GeoTalks was held on 22 November 2023, hosted by the Chair of the UN Geospatial Network, who welcomed @momohsen8 Geospatial Information Officer @unmigration for @dtm_iom which is part of IOM’s Global Data Institute.

The topic of the GeoTalks was “Monitoring and reporting human mobility using geospatial information and tools”.

DTM geospatial information helps gather, analyze, and disseminate critical multi-layered data and knowledge on the mobility, needs and vulnerabilities of displaced and mobile populations. This data then supports decision-makers and responders in providing these populations better context-specific assistance, particularly for emergency response.

@dtm_iom, part of the Global Data Institute @unmigration, and the SOAS Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies @soasuni hosted a two-day data workshop: Story-Telling Through Data, Wed, 29 Nov and Sat, 2 Dec 2023.

The objectives of these data day workshops are to build students’ technical capacity to conduct data analysis and utilise collective skills to enhance IOM’s understanding of the relationship between climate change and mobility.

This past Saturday, we concluded day two, which was about hands-on data analysis. In teams, the twenty-four participants dove into DTM datasets with support from IOM mentors offering guidance on using them effectively. Teams then presented an aspect of climate change and mobility, combining a narrative and visual representation of the DTM datasets.

Here is how two SOAS University of London participants described their workshop experience:

‘Learn more about data in the humanitarian sector, with a good introduction to data and data use, alongside working in a team to find a narrative through DTM data’ - Masion Li, 2nd yr, global development.

‘Opportunity to learn hard skills and technical skills for the field I am going into, understanding how migration data can be analysed and collected. Data is essential for understanding migration trends, so these skills have been invaluable’ - Anna Simon Serra, 3rd yr, law and global development.

Congratulations and thank you to all who participated in this instalment of #DTMSOASDataDay #IOMSOASDataDay

@dtm_iom part of the Global Data Institute @unmigration and the SOAS Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies @soasuni are hosting a two-day data workshop: Story-Telling Through Data, Wed, 29 Nov and Sat, 2 Dec 2023.

The objectives are to build students' technical capacity to conduct data analysis and utilise collective skills to enhance IOM's understanding of the relationship between climate change and mobility.

Yesterday, we wrapped day one. Twenty-four participants were introduced to DTM's methodological framework and the types of data collected and available for analysis. Followed by training on Excel and pivot tables using a DTM operation as a case study.

The event's outcome will be a written piece related to climate change and mobility, combining a narrative and visual representation using DTM datasets. The winner will showcase their work on DTM's website dtm.iom.int, a SOAS blog, and across the DTM Social Network of accounts.

Here are some day-one photos. See you Sat 2 Dec, as we reconvene for day two of this instalment #DTMSOASDataDay #IOMSOASDataDay

🎙️ How do you use social media to deliver humanitarian aid?

@oxfordsparks chat's with Dr Douglas Leasure @oxford_uni's Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science about how his team, in partnership with @unmigration's Global Data Institute (GDI), @dtm_iom @migrationstats have been using social media data to assess the internal displacement of populations in Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022, to help ensure humanitarian aid is delivered as effectively as possible.

With support from @eu_partnerships through the Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP) project, DTM collects data on the outflows of undocumented migrants from Afghanistan at the Torkham and Chaman border crossing points to better understand the migration movements of undocumented Afghan migrants returning to Afghanistan from Pakistan @iompakistan @iomasiapacific @unmigration

Between July and September 2021, 4,860 undocumented Afghan nationals spontaneously returned from Pakistan to Afghanistan.
