Great day of freshwater fishing with @dtotsfishing on the canals. We targeted bowfin, a species I knew next to nothing about before yesterday. I lucked out with these two big ones. It turns out they are super fun to catch on light tackle, and really fascinating to learn about, too.

.
•Bowfin are bimodal breathers (like gar or tarpon), which is why we saw them rolling on the surface. They do this to supplement air in low-oxygen/warm water.
•Beyond their vascularized swim bladder, they also have other interesting anatomical features. They have a skeleton which is part bone and part cartilage, including a “double skull” — cartilage encased in bone. I also read that it’s the thickest, densest skull of any fish.
The juveniles and adult males also have that pretty eyespot (ocellus) on their tails, like the bullseye snakeheads. But that spot fades (sometimes completely) in adult females, leading me to believe both fish in the photos above are girls.
While bowfin don’t have great eyesight, they have an excellent sense of smell, enhanced by their tubular nostrils.
•Like so many of our native species, bowfin get a bad reputation for competing with so-called gamefish. I’d argue that this primitive, armored fish earned its place, having endured since the time of the dinosaurs. In fact, science shows that apex predators like bowfin simply feed the most on the prey that’s most abundant. Across the bowfin’s range this could be smaller fish like bullheads and bluegill and shad, but their diet can also include frogs, crustaceans, mice, large insects, etc. The multiple bowfin I hooked during this fishing trip enthusiastically hit both live shiners under a bobber and a 3 1/2” Vudu shrimp in the Rootbeer colorway.
