Announcing recent grantees and program expansion with additional philanthropic support! The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is thrilled to announce the recipients of our 5th Cycle of New York City Small Theatres Fund. This grant program, established in 2021 with the generous support of the Howard Gilman Foundation, is expanding with an additional multi-year gift from an anonymous donor. We are proud to announce the 29 recipients for FY27-FY28. Selected from an initial application pool of nearly 200 applications, the funded theatres will receive two years of flexible, general operating support to support the operations of their theatre companies. This year’s 29 recipients represents a 70% increase in grantees, up from 17 last cycle. We are excited to continue to be able to provide multi-year support to this vibrant and crucial segment of New York City’s cultural ecosystem. And thus, is June (I did the Moth and was off-Broadway as a playwright and got great reviews for LAGN and saw James Taylor and was told my brain was “unremarkable”)

If you want to experience a truly breathtaking, soul-stirring piece of theater tomorrow, you must get yourself to La MaMa to see Kevin Powell’s performance. This show is incredibly close to my heart. It features Kevin—a beautiful, longtime friend whom I was blessed to meet through my beloved sister, Lana Garland—alongside the phenomenal Stephen Haley, a brilliant Dance Theatre of Harlem school alumnus. This is more than just a play; it is a remarkable, must-see piece of art. Please go support these incredible spirits! Credit to @duafnyc ‼️This Weekend‼️ Grammy-nominated poet Kevin Powell premieres an excerpt of his forthcoming choreopoem, GROCERY SHOPPING WITH MY MOTHER. The excerpt is titled "my father could not read or write" and will be performed by Kevin with live music. Coinciding with both Juneteenth and Father's Day Weekend, the two performances, directed by Tyneshia Hill, explore fatherhood, abandonment, mental health, healing, and the many meanings of freedom. Join us at La MaMa Theatre this Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm! Tickets available on duafnyc.com #DUAF26 #NycTheatre #newwork #Theatre

Is there such a thing as a mini musical? One suspects the two shows offered at a recent Downtown Urban Arts Festival program -- Carter Quinn Tanis and Marissa Raine Carlin’s “Whiskey, Hope, and The Climate Clock” (roughly 15 minutes) and Howard Ho’s “Sing Truth to Power” (30 minutes) -- are more works in development than finished affairs. But they both managed to showcase smart concepts and catchy songwriting. Ho’s show, about a K-pop star and a wily dictator, had more meat on its bones, but the Tanis/Carlin two-hander about the end of the world exhibited a deftly engaging appeal. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
