ETERNAL DRIFT

ANNA KOSTRYTSKA
MATTHEW STONE
MARIUS SEIDLITZ

OPENING 29 NOVEMBER 6-8 PM

D Contemporary is delighted to present the final exhibition of the year, Eternal Drift, a group show featuring works by Anna Kostrytska, Mathew Stone, and Marius Seidlitz.

The exhibition crafts forms that evoke a perpetual cognitive shift, unsettling the perceived hierarchies of the artistic process. In their hands, forms and characters flow seamlessly between formalistic realms, embracing their interconnectedness and blurring the lines between analogue and digital, traditional and contemporary.

In Heesoo Kim’s latest solo exhibition, Normal Life, the artist conveys the thoughts and feelings of those around him, using his own singular perspective to visualise our shared anxieties.

Exemplifying what Kim calls ‘neutral expression’, the exhibition distils the experience of standing quietly next to a stranger, observing them only for a moment before moving on. The figures in Kim’s paintings remain deliberately obscure. Devoid of idiosyncrasies, these people could be anyone. For Kim, ‘emotionless characters mirror the hidden side of modern society, becoming projections of the more difficult thoughts and feelings that we strive to push away.

The artist is particularly interested in the singular anxiety that has grown from our rapidly developing technological age. While we simultaneously expose and mask our true selves online, we retreat from the physical world to digital spheres. This sense of isolation is reflected in Kim’s portraits in which figures either appear alone or are presented together with minimal interaction These ideas eventually give way to a more positive outlook. In Kim’s preferred painting of the exhibition, Untitled (Trust), a figure falls through mid-air, seemingly reaching out for support.

Another figure, a later addition by the artist, appears at the bottom of the frame with arms outstretched to brace the fall. Kim hints at ideas of companionship, reminding us that we are not always alone.

Opening 6 to 8pm on Thursday, March 7, “Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street” at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. Curated by Fred Hoffman with Larry Gagosian, it is the first exhibition focused exclusively on works that Jean-Michel Basquiat produced in Los Angeles.

For an artist closely affiliated with the New York art scene of the 1980s, Basquiat was extraordinarily prolific in Los Angeles. Between November 1982 and May 1984, he produced approximately a hundred paintings, numerous works on paper, and six silkscreen editions in Venice, California. “Made on Market Street” will present many of these pivotal works together again for the first time. Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys

10 February- 7 July 2024

Great Hall, 1st Floor

Brooklyn Museum

200 Eastern Parkway

Brooklyn, New York 11238-6052

Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gordon Parks, Lorna Simpson, these are just a few names within the expansive collection curated by the iconic Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys

In their inaugural major exhibition, Giants, the Brooklyn Museum collaborates with the Dean Collection to unveil a meticulously curated selection from their extraordinary holdings. This presentation places a spotlight on works by Black diasporic artists, contributing to an ongoing effort to broaden and enrich the art-historical narrative. The exhibition is not merely a display of artworks; it’s a deliberate effort to extend the narrative, to weave new threads into the fabric of artistic discourse.

“Giants” encapsulates multiple layers of meaning within the Dean Collection. The towering reputation of legendary artists, the transformative influence of contemporary creators who challenge and expand the canon, and the sheer monumentality of works by visionaries like Derrick Adams, Arthur Jafa, and Meleko Mokgosi.

A show that speaks to the robust relationships forged between the Deans and the artists they passionately support, highlighting the interconnectedness as well as creating a trailblazing network of collaboration and inspiration that goes beyond the confines of individual works.

The exhibition not only delves into these intricate links and enduring legacies but also invites viewers into “giant conversations” inspired by the exhibited works—discussions that delve into societal critique and celebrate the profound beauty of Blackness.

How can we chart a course to stretch the very fabric of texture, space, and desire itself?
Blurring the lines between concept and aesthetics, D Contemporary is proud to present the group exhibition “Softcore/Hardcore, showcasing works of art that abruptly confront you with your own sensitive side contrasted against your rough and raw animal instincts.
.
Softcore / Hardcore approaches the idea aesthetically, thematically, and conceptually, simultaneously highlighting by blurring the line between the two featuring artworks that draw you in a soothing, erotic, and sensual way.
.
Curated by Jonathan Fakinos and featuring a group of both London-based and international artists whose themes traverse through tactile forms, corporeal intrinsic reactions, consumption, and illicit desire, the show reflects on attributes of artistic formalism and the sensualities that arise when forms follow ‘function!’
Through a series of sculptures, paintings, and installations, Softcore/Hardcore examines notions of haptic as an obiect of inquiry. Generating a critical insight into emergent tactile economies and approaches surface as a specific set of material negotiations between bodies and sensibilities.

Ant Hamlyn (B. 1993 Northampton, UK) lives and works in London. Stay tuned for our interview with @anthamlyn coming soon to @artcollectornews .

Working across a pollination of hand made and digital fabrication processes, Ant Hamlyn’s works delve into our relationship and fluctuating enthusiasm towards contemporary life. His sculptures regularly have anthropomorphic elements and work with metaphor, technology and the interplay between hard and soft
to create moments of tactility and surprise through material and visual obscurity. Often creating relics from a recognizable yet parallel space.

Hamlyn’s conceptual framework is recently taken from plants, nostalgia,
preservation and magic. With the exception of a number of larger kinetic installations, the majority of Hamlyn’s works are meticulously sewn by hand. This delicate interplay between materiality, scale and context are intrinsic to the simultaneous creation of mystery, familiarity and deception.

His works are held in private international collections. His studio is currently in South West London.

He studied Ba Fine Art at Liverpool Hope University (2012-15 ) and Ma fine art Chelsea College of Art (2016-17) after receiving the Cecil Lewis Sculpture Scholarship.

Maxwell Stevens was born in Charleston, South Carolina (USA) in 1971. He received an MFA in Painting from the School of Art at Washington University in Saint Louis in 1995. He is best known for his multi-layered paintings and drawings that overlay photorealistic images with vivid, energized abstractions.
Shortly after moving to New York City, after many years of working exclusively in non-representational abstraction, Maxwell Stevens embarked on a significant stylistic shift in his approach to his art. He began composing his canvases with recognizable imagery, incorporating photorealist figures and lifelike scenes into his works, and then abruptly superposing these paintings directly with tumultuous abstractions. This new period is clearly identifiable by large abstract painted gestures superimposed directly on top of photorealist paintings that have become increasingly descriptive, with each series correlating the seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, around a deeply personal and often autobiographical theme. In an essay entitled Maxwell Stevens: Thesis, Antithesis & Synthesis, NYArts Magazine observed “These vivid gestures of thick impasto grow invariably in an upwards motion as abrupt expressions that reach the viewer with immediate emotional charge and the space far beyond the canvas.” By dramatically increasing the surface tension of the canvases, from the chaotic clouds of brushstrokes that remain individually visible underneath, to the bowlike tension of a unified flat and hard mirror surface, the artist makes them most accessible to the viewer.

D Contemporary in collaboration with ARTCOLLECTORNEWS, is pleased to present ‘VICES', Mister Papercut's first solo London exhibition curated by Jonathan Fakinos @artcollectorsinc opening tomorrow Friday July 14th.

Celebrated as a top street artist and contemporary artist to watch, Mister Papercut brings us his latest body of work focusing on darker aspects of human nature, attempting to portray humanity in its rawest state, drawing us to where the meaning of individual symbols collapses into narratives that reflect the status quo or abstracted allowing the viewer to create their own narrative. Through their repeated symbolism of vices, the artworks are mirrors of society. By revealing hidden desires, choices, and habits beyond our control offering a powerful commentary on the human experience prompting viewers to reflect on the line between vices and virtues.
‘Cutting & sticking their way through the layers of life’, Mister Papercut's collages are the simplification and exaggeration of the human form. By distilling the human figure into its essential elements, they strip away the intricacies and complexities often associated with it. Manipulating and rearranging cut-outs, the artist creates visual narratives that portray various emotional conditions and situations, offering a platform for contemplation and introspection. Despite its whimsical and playful nature, Mister Papercut's art serves as a disguise, drawing viewers in with its charm and light-heartedness.

In the artist's work, the use of a faceless person as a simplified representation of the human form serves as a powerful symbol of anonymity and universality. By removing specific, ethnic, or physical characteristics, the artist creates a tabula rasa character, a panopticon overlooking symbols of debauchery, violence, and social decay. The work represents a higher vantage point, shedding light on the darker corners of our collective existence while we are confronted with imagery that serves as a catalyst for introspection and encourages us to grapple with the complexities of our choices and their impact on ourselves and society at large.

.
Adam Handler is an American artist known for distinctive characters which almost appear flat, with little to no depth of field. These bats, ghosts, and wide-eyed girls are created in a style that’s been described as quirky, colorful, and primitive, embodying innocence and adolescent energy. Though best described as a naïve artist due to childlike perspective and sincerity of his works, Handler is a trained painter, having studied Life Drawing in Italy and later graduated from Purchase College with a degree in Art History.
