Coffee can be complex, electric, capricious. ⚡

Take Pacamara: born in El Salvador in 1958 from a cross of Pacas and Maragogipe, it produces some of the largest beans in coffee but, at the same time, some of the most unpredictable roasts. Learn more about this fickle, unforgiving, and completely mesmerising varietal in ‘¿Pero por qué Pacamara?’, written by Rafael Sans (@rafa.el.sans) and published in our newest edition, @standartmag Issue 44.

🔬 STANDART ISSUE 44: CURIOSITY

Fresh off-the-press, our autumn issue is all about radical curiosity: the itch to ask why, to turn down the side street, to peer a little closer at the cup in front of you.

We begin by putting something scandalous in that cup: salt. In ‘Worth its Salt’, writer and sociologist (@noa__berger) makes the subversive case for the savoury coffee, arguing that our collective sweet tooth has less to do with taste than with empire and the factory floor.

From one stubborn ingredient to another: in ‘¿Pero por qué Pacamara?’, we chase the coffee world’s most mercurial variety: fickle, unforgiving, and utterly mesmerizing.

For a bit of history, in ‘Coffee’s Oldest Lie?’, James Harper of @filterstoriespodcast follows a single mistranslated word from 17th-century Rome, and discovers that coffee’s supposed thousand-year pedigree may be one enormous clerical error.

We travel, too. In Addis Ababa, our African correspondent and photographer Carl van der Linde (@carlmeer) captures the daily ritual of shared coffee. Travelling north through the continent, we visit the beautiful, crumbling cafes of Alexandria, before drifting into the heat and hangovers of a binge in Kuala Lumpur.

For the karaoke-inclined among you, we’ve even tracked down the perfect coffee-lover’s anthem. You’ll have to read on to find out what!

Fittingly for an issue that spends its time in the hills of Kenya, this one ships to our subscribers with a fully-washed SL28/SL34 from Kamoini Factory: all red currant, yuzu, strawberry, and mango, roasted by @ordinarycoffeeroasters.

This issue is brought to you in collaboration with @3temp. Learn more about how they are changing the game in this issue’s exclusive brand feature. A heartfelt thank you to goes to our other partners at @sanremocoffeemachines, @aprilcoffeecph, @ecotact, @rocketespresso, @yonex_tennis & @ecmespresso for making the new issue with us.

Pour a cup and kindle the fire of curiosity: see link in bio & subscribe today.
