Throughout Black History Month, we’ve been acknowledging local leaders and everyday heroes who make South Central stronger, and Auntie Debbie is one of them.

A proud graduate of John C. Fremont High School, Auntie Debbie has lived her entire life in South Central, dedicating herself to uplifting the very community that raised her. She is a 20-year member of UNITE HERE and worked at the Westin Bonaventure.

Today, she continues serving our community through Auntie Debbie’s Day Care on Wall and 60th, creating a safe and loving space for our children to learn and grow. She is also a faithful member of Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Community Church, where her commitment to faith and community shines.

Auntie Debbie represents the heart of Black History Month — service, resilience, faith, and generational impact right here in South Central.

Today, UNITED WE STAND UP brought the community together on the Eastside of Los Angeles for a powerful event rooted in healing, unity, and peace. 🌟

As a coalition of community members from South Central, the organization is dedicated to rebuilding neighborhoods and creating safe, thriving spaces for future generations. Through their 3-prong model—healing, unifying communities, and transforming gang culture—they continue to show what real peace in the streets looks like.

I am deeply honored to receive this award from Volunteers of America in recognition of my work in South Los Angeles. This acknowledgment means so much to me, not just personally, but because it shines a light on the resilience, strength, and spirit of the community I am privileged to serve. Every day, I am inspired by the work VOA does in keeping our youth on the right path.
