The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, officially known as the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, was a neutrality agreement signed by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union on August 23, 1939. It committed both nations to refrain from attacking each other for a period of ten years. A secret protocol within the pact also divided Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence, paving the way for the invasion and partition of Poland.
Key Aspects of the Pact:
Non-Aggression:
The core of the agreement was a pledge by Germany and the Soviet Union not to attack each other for a decade.
Secret Protocol:
A significant, and later revealed, aspect was a secret protocol that secretly divided Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence. This included the division of Poland and Soviet control over parts of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania.
Motivations:
Both Hitler and Stalin saw the pact as beneficial to their strategic interests. Hitler aimed to avoid a two-front war while invading Poland, while Stalin sought time to build up the Soviet military.
Consequences:
The pact enabled the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, marking the start of World War II. Shortly after, the Soviet Union also invaded Poland from the east.
Breaking of the Pact:
The agreement was broken in 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union.
