Good Monday Morning to all Gigwatchers!

This week, we have so much to look forward to here in the DMV, including:

• @hassak_official's ethno-folk all the way from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿🇰🇿🇰🇿
• The DC farewell gig from @prettybitter.mp3, one of those rare bands that has wowed me every single time I've seen them
• The inaugural (?) @barrelhousecafeandbar show with @taisha_estrada, giving you the exclusive chance to enter a live music event through a 1940s-era giant whiskey barrel
• Hometown show from DC's own @kelela, alongside @keiyaa, making for performances from two excellent genre-warping artists whose names begin with the letter K
• Sunday evening metalcore at a Sterling, VA pizza shop with @mercywhip, @seikilosband, @tormenthc, and @buckshotttbabyyy
• Rock and roll distilled to its core with @classictrafficsucks, @beauty_nj_, and @fondbandva at @galactic.panther
• @open_mike_eagle, one of the wittiest wordsmiths of contemporary rap and hip hop, together live for the first time with @kennysegal, one of the genre's great creative producers, at @songbyrddc, a venue of the perfect size and atmosphere for an Open Mike Eagle show
• A cozy 9:30 AM (yes, you read that right) gig on Saturday morning at @greenroom.irl featuring saxophonist @ejbjazz of @jogoprojectofficial and more, hosted by @sandflowerrecords

What gig(s) are you getting to during this bountiful week of Gig?

This post is just about community!!

I’ve spent most of my life looking for the people I have in my life now. I never fully gave up knowing that eventually, I would feel at home. At home in my skin and at home with the people around me. When you’ve felt so heavy for so long and there’s finally some reprieve, you worry that it won’t last, like you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop.

But the peace I feel is so persistent that I don’t find myself giving into worrying about whether or not it’ll go away. And that really is lovely. I hope there’s persistent peace around the corner for you, if you haven’t already found it.

Composer and pianist @niko_michalopoulos has released award-winning music videos from his album Songs for G@za — “I Am Not Afraid” (Drum Remix). Built from the real words of children in G@za, the project merges piano composition, contemporary #dance, and cinematic storytelling. The videos have won multiple international awards and helped raise over $51,000 for UNRWA.
Niko brings a unique perspective as the grandson of an Armenian Genoc1de survivor, exploring intergenerational trauma, resistance, and survival through music. The project has sparked strong responses across music, activist, and art communities and winning numerous music video film festival awards.

You can watch it in full here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyY-a2IGaXU

All proceeds from Songs for G@za support UNRWA’s vital work in P@les+in1e.
