Duende Achuwe Artists’ Residency - I’m excited to share some in-progress photos of the first structure to this cause.

The Duende Achuwe artists’ residency @duende_achuwe on Ghana’s Atlantic coast, is a space to connect creatives across Africa and the Caribbean, two regions with deep historical and geographic ties, yet with a present-day disconnect in cultural exchange. It has been about 2 years of planning, designing and building this space to be respectful of the place where it sits and to work and innovate with local materials.

It’s also been a personal landmark moment as this is my first design-build project, and it would not be possible without the help of the tight and dedicated team that made and realized this vision.
I designed this structure with my long-time friend and mate from architecture school, Cornelius Kyei Boateng @boateng_ck, a timber frame structure, externally clad with raffia palm/timber panels and raised on concrete stilts.

The structure is part of a grounded and sensitive vision of the land by Lisa Soto @sotostudio_ and Yankey Kobina @kkobinayankey . An honor on many fronts and I’m humbled.

What does fungal • healing • hip-hopped curating look like?

* Poetic, polyvocal and interpersonal exhibition texts

* Works captioned in artists’ own voices and the voices of their collaborators/communities

* Graphic, sonic and filmic interpretations in addition to textual writing, with the mediums plasticizing into each other

* Interpretation of the art that doesn’t define/describe it so much as give you an experience of it, or collage multiple perspectives around it

* Interpretation of the art that analyzes the structure, essence, function, relations, and transformative potentials

* Attunement to the multiple subjects around, under, behind, ahead of and after central subjects; a widened “aperture” of artistic authorship

* Layered social processes that connect communities, disciplines, spaces and knowledge systems; that evolve and have multiple afterlives; that code-switch into pieces of their own in other contexts; that operate with consent, confrontation and dialogue

* Making use of everyday life as a raw material whose residues and recordings can be repurposed; and as an open canvas for interstitial, unframed, bottom-up exhibitions

* Intertwining indigenous knowledge with modernist canons; unearthing connections between ancestral and contemporary practices and philosophies

* Artists and actors within systems taking agency to reprogram the houses that hold them

* Other aspects I’ve failed to recall or that others can hack, add or expand

Group exhibition: “Familiar Relations, Fleeting Realms” curated by @kwamewrite and produced by @elolobosoka at the #georgepadmorelibrary. My installation “First Responders: Ecology of the uninvited” speaks to the tools we use, the language we employ to label plants—especially those we deem as “weeds”—carrying the weight of colonial history, as does the garden itself. The term “weed,” is not just a botanical categorization; it is a judgment, a renaming of plants that are perceived as foreign invaders. Leading to the question “Who has gone into whose garden?” My Kumasi garden, depicted in the photo collages on wood and on paper scrolls, has become a site of both observation and realization. What began as a space I controlled has transformed into one where I recognize that my every action—my movements, my sounds, my smell, even my very presence—are being observed by these plants. In turn, my poem ”Malahierba”, on the garden, is fragmented, and used as bookmarks in books chosen from the George Padmore library, in which the installation is displayed, on the topic of plants in Ghana. On the floor lay two kitchen drawers filled with earth and little paper scrolls with lines from the same poem, inviting viewers to pick a line, to harvest a fragment, and in doing so, to set off a cascade of thoughts and new ideas about our relationship with plants. By tearing the poem into pieces, I create a space for individual interpretation, allowing each person to follow a different thread, to rethink their assumptions, and to reconsider the plants we have labeled “weeds.” In this fragmented form, the poem becomes a tool for disruption, leading the reader down an alternate path of thought.
In the end, what we have are clues to old stories—and the possibility of new ones, told from many perspectives, including those of the plants themselves.

‘Constellations Part 2: Figures in Webs and Ripples of Space’ distinctly re-examines the way we understand the place of humans in the world, to challenge us into rethinking ecology without essentialist narratives of ‘nature’. This interconnected portal focuses on immersive site-specific installations such as Lisa C Soto’s which is at the epicentre of the major multimedia group exhibition.

‘Interruptions: An Alchemical Encounter’ invites viewers to explore a space within a space—a wallpaper image of an abandoned laboratory on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, nestled within an assemblage of entwined plants above the wallpaper and small redwood pieces crafted in the shapes reminiscent of islands.

In a parallel exploration, strands of ‘green rivers’ hang from the skylight - photo collages of the artist’s garden in Kumasi over a two-year period, creating a place where diverse, unexpected realities intersect. By juxtaposing the remnants of the laboratory—the beakers and apparatus—against the green rivers and the collages on redwood, Soto aims to construct an entirely new ecosystem, perhaps a crossroads where ideas flourish and new questions arise.

‘Constellations Part 2: Figures in Webs and Ripples of Space’ is on view until the 10th of October on the Third Floor, Galleria Mall, Kempinski Hotel Accra, don’t miss your chance to be immersed in the radical imaginations of 25 artists.
