Duffy's Cut is a historic railroad construction site located near present-day Malvern, Pennsylvania, where 57 Irish immigrant laborers died under mysterious circumstances in August 1832. In June of that year, an Irish contractor named Philip Duffy hired the young men—primarily from the Ulster counties of Donegal, Tyrone, and Derry—straight off an immigration ship to lay a particularly challenging section of track known as Mile 59 for the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad. Within roughly six weeks of their arrival, all 57 workers were dead. While official railroad company files long maintained that the entire crew succumbed to a massive local outbreak of the second cholera pandemic, historical anomalies and modern archaeological excavations have revealed a much darker narrative. Because cholera rarely exhibits a 100% mortality rate in a population, researchers led by Dr. William Watson and Frank Watson began excavating the area in the early 2000s after uncovering confidential, suppressed railroad documents. Forensic anthropologists analyzing the recovered remains found that several skulls bore clear evidence of violent trauma, including bullet wounds and hatchet strikes. This evidence strongly suggests that while many may have died from disease, some of the isolated, vulnerable workers were brutally murdered by local residents out of extreme anti-Irish sentiment or a panicked fear of contagion. Rather than reporting the tragedy, the railroad buried the victims anonymously in a ditch and kept the true details under lock and key for over 140 years until the files were leaked. Today, the site is recognized by a Pennsylvania state historical marker, and the ongoing Duffy's Cut Project continues to preserve the memory of these forgotten laborers.#chestercountypa #chestercounty #malvern #malvernpa #duffyscut

A couple of us were talking about this last night. Here is local history involving the murder of 57 Irish railroad workers off of the present day SEPTA Paoil-Thorndale line (R5).

The Duffy’s Cut murders involved the deaths of 57 Irish immigrant laborers in 1832 near Malvern, Pennsylvania. They were hired to build a section of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad but died under suspicious circumstances. Evidence suggests some were murdered, possibly due to anti-Irish prejudice. Mass graves were discovered in the early 2000s. Forensic analysis revealed signs of blunt force trauma, indicating foul play.

Follow the Duffy’s Cut Museum to see the work they continue to do.
