🎓 Today, Jeroen Molinger earned his PhD from Erasmus University. I could not be prouder.

His thesis, From ICU to Function, asks a question that has guided our work together since we met in Paris at the Shock Society in 2017:

👉 What does survival mean if we cannot help people get their lives back?

Jeroen has spent his career helping critically ill and surgical patients do just that. Before COVID-19 vaccines existed, he spent thousands of hours at the bedside of mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients, using metabolic carts and muscle ultrasound to help the world and our team publish the first description of metabolic effects of Covid-19. That took exceptional commitment —and courage.

On our Duke STRONGER team, he has helped patients once considered too frail or with to little muscle mass / nutritional reserve for organ or bone marrow transplantation become strong enough to receive life-saving treatment and return to an active life after.

I have also been one of his patients. After a month in the ICU and three major abdominal surgeries, Jeroen helped guide my muscle and metabolic recovery. Eight weeks later, my wife and I danced a competitive Argentine tango routine where I lifted her over my head 5 times. I had taught for 20 years you couldn’t go through critical illness without losing strength and muscle. He helped me see that muscle and strength loss and ICU-acquired weakness does not have to occur. He showed me what could be possible for me—and for our patients.

💪 He has helped us prove we can create SURVIVORS of our sickest patients and NOT Victims after ICU, surgery and cancer!

Jeroen, your science has changed our field. Your care has changed lives, including mine. It has been one of the great privileges of my career to be your promotor, colleague, and friend.

Congratulations, Dr. Jeroen Molinger. Look forward to all the incredible work we do to improve patients lives together moving forward! 💙

🤩 our next Summit All-Star: Michael Kissen!

Regional Anesthesia Director. Fellowship Director. Educator. And, judging from his answers to our questions, someone who is having WAY too much fun at work.

Michael’s favorite block is the paravertebral — “thoracic epidural’s cooler, less needy cousin.” He enjoys working just close enough to the pleura to feel alive. 😂

But behind the humor is some great advice for fellows: “Regioanl anesthesia isn’t about becoming comfortable with needles. It’s about becoming comfortable being uncomfortable.”

Michael is also helping push the boundaries of ERAs and enhanced-discharge pathways at Cedars-Sinai — including thinking about how regional anesthesia can help move care beyond the walls of the hospital.

Come learn, laugh and talk regional with Michael in Tampa.

Having major surgery? Your preparation shouldn’t start the morning you arrive at the hospital.

In fact, one of the most important things you can do for your recovery may happen BEFORE surgery.

💪 PREHABILITATION.

New 2026 evidence is compelling:

In 23 randomized trials involving 2,182 surgical patients, exercise- or nutrition-based prehabilitation was associated with:

⬇️ 48% lower odds of postoperative complications

And across 55 randomized trials in cancer surgery, exercise-based prehabilitation was associated with:

⬇️ 31% lower risk of pulmonary complications
⬇️ 41% lower risk of pneumonia
⬇️ 18% lower risk of overall complications
🏥 Shorter hospital stays

Think about it:

You wouldn’t run a marathon without training.
So why would you undergo major surgery without preparing your body first?

Major surgery challenges your muscle, heart, lungs, metabolism and nutritional reserves.

Prehabilitation gives us an opportunity to improve those reserves before they are needed most.

That is why we built the Duke STRONGER Prehabilitation and Post-Hospital Rehabilitation Program.

Our STRONGER Clinic Team doesn’t just tell patients to “exercise and eat better.”

We measure. Then we personalize.

We assess aerobic fitness, metabolism, muscle mass and quality, body composition, strength, physical function and nutrition—and use those results to develop an individualized plan before and after hospitalization.

The goal isn’t simply to get through surgery.

Enter stronger.
Recover better.
Get back to the life you want to live.

Now I want to hear from you:

👇 If you’ve had major surgery, were you EVER offered prehabilitation beforehand?

YES or NO?

And if someone you care about is preparing for major surgery:

📌 SAVE this post.
↗️ SHARE it with them.

Then ask the surgeon one simple question:

“Should I be doing prehabilitation before my operation?”

To learn more about the Duke STRONGER Prehabilitation and Post-Hospital Rehabilitation Program, reach out to me and/or talk with your surgeon.

🤩 Another Summit All-Star joins the lineup: Amanda Kumar!

Fellowship director. Simulation guru. Duke Anesthesiology Teacher of the Year. And exactly the kind of person you want in your corner as you make the leap form fellow to faculty.

Amanda is a phenomenal educator — thoughtful, practical, and especially good at helping trainees figure out not just how to become better anesthesiologists, but how to build a career with intention.

Her advice? Find your niche. Protect your time. And work toward becoming the person everyone thinks of when that topic comes up.

Come find Amanda in Tampa to talk about jumpstarting your career as early faculty. Bonus points if you ask her why the popliteal is the “champion of the lower extremity”! #regionalsummit26 #anesthesiology #fellowship #medicaleducation

The 2026 Duke Nerve Course is bringing ultrasound to life with dedicated hands-on peripheral nerve ultrasound sessions led by Duke faculty Drs. Blake Boggess, MD, Stephen Davies, MD, and Natalia Gonzalez, MD.

From high-resolution nerve identification and real-time scanning to understanding fascicular anatomy and surrounding structures, participants will get the probe in their own hands and learn directly from experts across musculoskeletal ultrasound, regional anesthesia, neurology, and neuromuscular imaging.

The best part? Take what you see on ultrasound and connect it directly to the anatomy in the Duke Human Fresh Tissue Laboratory. 🔬

🤩 The Summit All-Star lineup just got a whole lot more fun.

Meet Ryan Mountjoy — brilliant anesthesiologist, phenomenal educator, and someone who can somehow make a discussion about the brachial plexus both highly educational and completely hilarious.

That’s Ryan’s superpower: he makes complicated things relatable, memorable, and — most importantly — fun.

He’s also practiced just about everywhere: major academic centers, community hospitals, private practice, and rural critical access hospitals. So if you’re wondering what life after fellowship might actually look like, Ryan is someone you’ll want to talk to in Tampa.

His favorite block? The popliteal sciatic. His explanation involves “two eyeballs staring back at you”, metaphysics, and tears of joy. Obviously. 😂
