After Maadi 🇳🇿➡️🇺🇸

What comes after your final Maadi Regatta?

For Angalla Carney, it meant swapping life in NZ for North Carolina and taking on a new challenge at Duke University.

A multiple Maadi medallist and 2025 World Junior representative, Angalla is now balancing high-performance rowing with a civil engineering degree - with her sights still set on one day representing New Zealand at senior level.

From her first taste of rowing at Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club to a gold medal in the U18 single sculls at her final Maadi, it’s been quite a journey.

Now, just over a month into her Duke adventure, she’s embracing everything that comes with life as a student-athlete in the US.

From the @bigten to the @ivyleague to the @accsports and @sec and everywhere in between we are all so proud to rep our Alma maters. Collegiate rowing is direct pipeline to our National Team, and we are all so grateful of the support and teams that helped us get to the World stage. 100% of our squad were @ncaa student athletes — cheers to collegiate women in the boat!

This wild thing happened at Canley where someone confused @hillarysaeger as me, which was sneaky one of the best compliments of all time. I thought about making this an Ode to Hillary the Greatest™️ , but the truth is, I’ve been SO LUCKY to work with Hillary, @justayoungwhelp, AND Katy coaching the @greenracingproject this summer. Not only did I get to work with some really wonderful and talented athletes (and run into a couple of Duke’s own wonderful and talented rowers!), I also worked with coaches who pushed me to be better, taught me a few things, were vulnerable about their own growth, and made me laugh…a lot.

When recruits tell me what they want in college, it’s often to be surrounded by people who push them to be better and become their best buds. As a coach, this also guides a lot of my own choices of where I coach and with whom. I definitely have the ultimate setup at Duke, and this summer I got to experience it in a whole new environment and with a new style of coaching at @craftsburyoutdoorcenter

Sad to leave GRP for now, but excited to come back to Duke as an even better coach.
#gosprigs 🌿🌿 and, of course, as always #goduke 😈

Special shoutout to Coach Mom for suiting up and riding along! 💙

A chance to lead, learn and grow. ⭐️

Student-athletes Langston Thomas (@duketfxc), Molly Hess (@dukerow), Spencer von Savoye (@dukewres) and Keira Lu (@dukeswimdive) traveled to Washington, D.C. for the ACC Unity Tour, visiting the United States Capitol, the Supreme Court and other historic sites while exploring how sport can unite communities and create positive change.

Special thanks to Associate Director of Athletics/Student-Athlete Development @labarnes2014 for leading nightly reflection sessions throughout the trip. Spencer von Savoye, Molly Hess, Langston Thomas and Keira Lu in front of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

So Proud of Ava & Brooke! 🚣‍♀️🇺🇸

This weekend, Ava and Brooke represented our program at the USRowing Youth National Championships, and what an incredible performance they delivered.

They finished 2nd in their heat and 17th in the nation—an amazing accomplishment at one of the most competitive youth rowing events in the country.

It’s hard to believe that Rob and I started our Learn to Row program in 2022, and now we’re celebrating athletes competing at the national level. What began as a vision to introduce more students to the sport of rowing has grown into something truly special.

Our goal has always been to help students find a sport they love, build a strong foundation of strength and fitness, develop sound rowing technique, and learn the discipline, resilience, and grit that come from pursuing excellence.

Watching these athletes grow from beginners into national-level competitors has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. Every student who has been part of Concept Crew has played an important role in building this program. The culture, camaraderie, and success we’ve experienced belong to all of them.

As they close this chapter, we’re excited to watch what comes next. Ava will continue her rowing career at the University of Delaware, and Brooke will be rowing at Duke University. We know both of them have bright futures ahead.

Ava and Brooke, congratulations on an incredible season and an outstanding performance at Nationals. We are so proud of you both and grateful to have been a part of your journey.

From Learn to Row to Youth Nationals to collegiate rowing—what a journey. 💙🚣‍♀️

Today, we celebrate four incredible student-athletes who are graduating from our program and continuing their rowing careers at the collegiate level.

💙 Brooke → Duke University
⭐ Talene → Vanderbilt University
💛 Ava → University of Delaware
💚 Caelin → Loyola University Maryland

Watching these athletes grow from beginners into confident competitors, leaders, and teammates has been one of the greatest rewards of coaching. Their success is a testament to years of hard work, early mornings, perseverance, and a commitment to the process.

At Concept Crew, our mission has always been bigger than rowing. We strive to use this sport to open doors, build character, and create opportunities for young athletes to achieve their goals. Seeing these four take the next step in their journey is exactly why we do what we do.

We couldn’t be prouder of everything they have accomplished, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve at the next level.

Congratulations, Brooke, Talene, Ava, and Caelin. Once a Concept Crew athlete, always a Concept Crew athlete. 🚣‍♀️❤️
