Read the review of "Straight" If you identify as a cis gay man, there's a good chance you've experienced something similar to the plot "Straight": Roberto, who's got a girlfriend, hooks up with Cris, a young man who's far more comfortable with his own sexuality. "Wow, it's 2025 and they still make movies about closeted men?" Yeah...? After all, it's not like this doesn't happen anymore. Just log into Grindr and you'll find a long line of contestants to audition for this film. Speaking of the cast, it's important to note that the lead, Alejandro Speitzer, received mixed reviews; while some said he delivered all the uncertainty the role required, others condemned his performance as "lost" and "too restrained." I'm in the first group; there are scenes where Roberto tries to curb his sexual impulses with Cris but there are also moments where it's clear he's struggling to feel attracted to his girlfriend Elia, beautifully played by Bárbara López. Franco Masini brings to life the young man who is intense, has big dreams, and is willing to play the game, no matter what the cost might be. Marcelo Tobar's direction made me think of "The Whale," which is also a film based on a play; the photography is meticulous, the shots are long, and the setting, Roberto's apartment, is claustrophobic. Although the film presents conflicts that have been discussed over and over for the last decade, the message remains current: it's 2025 and many people still live under the weight of expectations imposed by society, their careers, or their loved ones. ✍️ @duopph

✍️ @duopph

Read the review of "Latin Blood – The Ballad of Ney Matogrosso" Despite consuming and seeking news focused on the LGBTQ+ community on a daily basis, being the Editor-in-Chief of ARCO does not make me an authority on these issues. I am far from it, actually. A clear and recent example is the night I watched "Latin Blood – The Ballad of Ney Matogrosso", a film by Esmir Filho about the living legend Ney Matogrosso. Until then, if someone had asked me to sing one of his songs or mention some fact about his life, I very shamefully would not have an answer. I did know that he had opened doors for many people here in Brazil just by his existence and resistance in the music industry, but it was long due I learned about one of the greatest icons of our community. To my surprise, Ney (brilliantly played by Jesuíta Barbosa) not only won me over but also fit perfectly into the Gender Issue of ARCO Brazil. Yes, I'm aware he identifies as a cis man, but let me tell you... No other Brazilian artist challenged gender norms like him, especially in the 70s and 80s. At some point, managers claim that Matogrosso's makeup in a TV performance is "too feminine", to which he responds by asking them to present a woman wearing the same makeup. Another incredible moment is the song "Mal Necessário", with the following verses: "I'm a man, I'm a beast, I'm a woman". And don't get me started on the outfits, it's hit after hit. Usually biopics shock and sadden me, because the vast majority are only released after the artist's death, but this time I got to the end with my heart full of enthusiasm; I learned a little more about a LIVING legend, from OUR community, and from MY country. Now all I can do is wait for Ney Matogrosso's next tour. ✍️ @duopph
