I am excited to host curator Sydney Fishman ’14 at Kenyon College this week to visit my Gender & the Body seminar to discuss contemporary performing art, in preparation for their next assignment, Performing the Body. You can hear Sydney speak about her career and how studying at #KenyonCollege helped spark her interests, during common hour this Thursday, February 15, at 11:10 AM in Horvitz 220. I hope to see you there! Images feature highlights from Sydney’s career, particularly curatorial projects for #marinaabramovic, such as Energy Clothes, and @duplex.nyc, featuring artists @sophiaexalted and @hannahcellihere. ps. @edendeering, you are coming to the ‘bier next time! Curator Bio: Sydney Fishman is an independent curator, director, and producer living and working in New York City. For the past decade, she has worked with Marina Abramović in both archival and curatorial roles; most recently, she curated MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ: Energy Clothes, Abramović’s 2023 show with the historic Galerie Krinzinger in Vienna; currently, she is curating a brand new exhibition using archival material to amplify Abramović’ twelve year collaboration with artist Ulay, the show will open in September 2025 in Ljubljana. Fishman is a founder and the director of DUPLEX, a nomadic curatorial project formed in 2016, dedicated to supporting the work of emerging and genre-defying artists. DUPLEX existed as a physical gallery from May 2021–May 2023 at 17 Essex Street, mounting first-time solo shows by myriad artists including Jake Brush, Hannah Celli, Sophia Giovannitti, and Nereida Patricia. Fishman’s curatorial practice is dedicated to close development of conceptual, performance, and physical work, with a particular emphasis on staging, recording, and archiving performance in newly alive ways. This year she is curating the Programming for 2024 BOFFO Residency and Festival in the Fire Island Pines.

I am so happy to have this work that was first shown at @duplex.nyc included in The Backend curated by @heavymetalcurator at @montclairstategalleries ❤️‍🔥 to be recognized and placed in a context specifically for my ideas around contracts, nullified legal interventions, and threats of violence or revenge is extra dreamy, s*x is sometimes the signifier but never and neither the beginning the end nor the most salient thing, just a very pointed, damning, malleable container. people say everything is about sex except sex which is about power and like, sure, but really everything is about power and really really everything is about money and being within or without the law. So thank u Jesse 🗽 for that recognition and curation amongst other artists whom I admire working in the conceptual register of underpinnings infrastructure tricks evasions bureaucracies and excavations 🕸️🕸️🕸️👱🏻‍♀️open thru 12/1

Before the month is up, I wanted to take time out to say acknowledge one of its highlights--Anna Bloda's MOTHER-HOOD curated by yours truly. There was a time when many of us thought we would never be the same again, only to find that we weren't the same... because we've gotten better. And we're going to keep getting better. 📸 by @nash1sh 🎥 by @slpshoots @annabloda @duplex.nyc @quietlunch | #Motherhood #AnnaBloda #Photography #AkeemKDuncan #Duplex #QuietLunch #ForTheQulture

I have known Anna Bloda for almost a decade now, and I've seen her career grow in many ways. We first featured her in Book №2 of Quiet Lunch (see last slide) and then collaborated for a Mishka shoot that was featured in the next issue. I've always been proud of her, and I'm happy to be curating her first solo exhibition titled MOTHER-HOOD at Duplex on Thursday April 13th. Encasing her subjects in a photographic placenta of self-love, self-awareness, and self-acceptance, Anna Bloda is mused not just by her subjects but the life force that dwells within them. It is this constant curiosity and maternal mastery that allows Bloda to deliver. Each moment is a breakthrough, captured with care. Each portrait is a transition into new life. Join us Thursday April 13th! @annabloda @duplex.nyc @akduncan @quietlunch | #Motherhood #AnnaBloda #Photography #AkeemKDuncan #QuietLunch #ForTheQulture #Duplex
