So glad I got to catch the very last day of the NCAD MFA Show in Rua Red Tallaght. The work from the artists absolutely owned the space, rising to the vast height in the space with confidence, clever curation and respectful collaboration to make all the diverse work sing. Well done to all the artists, an amazing and ambitious showcase. I don’t have the instagram accounts of the full group but here is a few… @ncad_dublin @rua_red @ncad_mfa_ @durcansarah @monikacrowley @odonnellartist_melissa @eilo8 @we_cant_rewind_gone_too_far

A fantastic and inspirational day at NCAD OPACITIES: Seminar, workshop and screening: Decolonial, Materialist and Ecological media practices.
Opacities brought together practitioners to consider Édouard Glissant’s decolonial idea of ‘opacity’ in relation to small scale media processes.

Organised by the @frugalmediaresearchgroup , the seminar was chaired by Jessica Foley, with presentations by Radek Przedpelski, Chloe Brenan, Sarah Durcan & Clodagh Assata Boyce. Followed by a wonderful key-note presentation and Q&A by theorist and curator Laura U. Marks whose work engages with media art and philosophy, with a particular focus on small-footprint media.

This seminar was followed by an evening screening of Manthia Diawara’s film Édouard Glissant: One World in Relation [2010]

@frugalmediaresearchgroup Spring Seminar Opacities (booking now) will feature a screening of Manthia Diawara’s film Édouard Glissant: One World in Relation [2010] a film created from a series of conversations which take place on a transatlantic voyage which provide an accessible view into Glissant’s thoughts and beliefs on his own theories. The seminar itself will explore Glissant’s ideas of relation, opacity and creolization in relation to decolonial, materialist and ecological paradigms embedded in post-digital media practices and cultures. This screening has been facilitated by @ncad_dublin through the Alexander Street Academic Video Online database. With special thanks to Katy Milligan for her support. image of philosopher edouard glissant sitting by a window on a ship

LAST DAYS: Periodical Review 14—A Language to Shout In
Exhibition closes this Saturday, 25th January 2025

Gallery hours:
12–6pm, Wednesday – Saturday

Periodical Review (2011–ongoing) is a long-running curatorial project which sets out to consider, revisit and review current movements within contemporary art practices from around Ireland. Intended as a space for critical appraisal and consolidation of ideas and knowledge, the aim through each subsequent edition is to facilitate and encourage new readings, collaboration, crossover and debate. Not a group exhibition per se, Periodical Review is a discursive action, with the gallery presented as a journal, a magazine-like layout of artworks in dialogue.

The exhibition title ‘A Language to Shout In’ is taken from the accompanying essay by Diana Bamimeke, recipient of the 2024 PPS/PVA Visual Art Writing Commission, presented in partnership with @pva_journal.

For more information see link in bio.

Work featured: 'The Invisibles' by Sarah Durcan, 2023

Really looking forward to Cliona Harmey’s talk Solar and Saline: The Unfixed Image at Foraging Media Symposium on Monday. Cliona’s talk uses fragments gleaned from practice-based experimentation and texts to explore ideas around energy capture, light and early photography’s attempts to achieve fixity in images. The quest for a stable image exists as part of a long conceptual continuum: this talk explores the potentials of embracing the image’s material instability. Cliona is an artist and educator working with media technologies. She runs the "Critical Making" module @ncad.media which focuses on a material led exploration of media practice and encompasses elements of small scale material making, code, as well as working with re-usable/re-configurable open source hardware.
Free, booking on Eventbrite. Walk-ins welcome, subject to availability.

Slán NCAD.
Thank you to everyone who supported me over the past 6 years, and the beautiful folks I spent the last two years of the mfa along side. Your kind words, good attitudes and timely chats kept me afloat.

Thank you to @mark_okelly for guidance and realness.
Thank you @philip.napier for thoughtful words and conversation.
Thank you @vanessaleejones81 for challenging my ideas and your supportive understanding.
Thank you @durcansarah for your directness and advice, and for making our final year a smooth one.
Thank you @ohalloranbeth for your kindness and encouragement, you've always made me feel seen.
Thank you @iulian.bocancea.art you were on my ass as a peer and a brilliant technician and I'll always appreciate it.
Thank you @matthewcoll.art you're a well of generosity and laughs.
Thank you to my friends, who've been there every time I've needed them, and it wasn't few.
Thank you to my family, I feel proud to have gotten to this stage of life and it wouldn't be only for them, telling me I should be, and helping me there.
Thank you @yoorwan.art I wouldn't be who I am now without you.

Thank you @ncad_dublin and all of the institutions that have made it possible in the past 6 years for me to pursue ideas and grow as a person. @susi, @1916_bursary, @artscouncilireland without these systems my life would be much smaller.
Art is endless and wonderful, and I am grateful for it all and more.
