This weekend’s @nyc_workingdogs mock trial was awesome, but the highlight was getting to share the field with @terrybocai and Thorn and @amandapeckhamm and Sirius! For the first time, Mama Eleven and her kids got to compete together! What an amazing feeling! To see Eleven’s legacy in real time was incomparable. Maxine even jumped into level 2 protection with her siblings!! Her kids are so talented with incredible handlers - the sky is the limit to their future. Thank you for the opportunity to experience this day 🙏💗 so excited to see what the future brings! 🔮🤩

Maxine is everything I hoped and dreamed for when I did this breeding in 2022. Thank you @maverickthedutchie for allowing the breeding with Maverick! What an amazing litter we created! All 4 puppies now titled, multiple WDs, it’s beyond my wildest dreams tbh.

Maxine is such a powerful, clear, stable, biddable dog who leave an impression on everyone she meets. It’s training her has been an absolute adventure for me. What she needed to thrive and grow was so different than what I am used to. Her drive matured much faster than her brain 😆 I may be down a couple useful fingers but so worth it..

Thank you @sk9_psa for offering us the spot at last minute. We’ve been on the waiting list for a long time and I wasn’t expecting that text. Thanks to everyone who helped at home so I was able to leave for 24 hours to show up for this trial short notice. @phyllistonnesen @perfectly_powell

Thank you @kim.cerio.canine for the fair and thorough judging - it was a pleasure and an honor to get both our PDC and now our first leg under you. Thank you @sroberts1731 for the reassuring stewarding, I felt more confident out there with you at my side! You were my judge when Eleven got her PDC in 2021 so it feels very fitting and full circle. Thanks to all of the decoys for your excellent catches and bringing my dog back to me safely. @captain_america_decoy @abraham_pena @bitenowoutlater @tytrainsdogs @deadpool_decoy @aus_ave

Thank you to all of my dog friends and family who are always there to support us and help us. Thank you @the__o__pack , @amazd_grace , @_gabriellarosales Micheal @petermancero @decoy_bw and @dianalynmurphy Wynn for help trial prepping when I wasn’t able to travel. Thank you @terrybocai and @rocco_family_dog_training for all of your expert decoying work to make sure we were ready. Thank you @chris_weber_02 for all the excellent foundation work you put into Maxine. Thank you to my club NYC WD for always being there when we need you!

He's truly the smartest dog I ever had and I can easily and truthfully say that he's even smarter than some Homo sapiens I had the misfortune of interacting with

Good training isn’t about forcing a dog into a system. it’s about adapting the system to the dog.

Traditional approaches often follow a simple pattern:
Obedience → Reward

But Mario thrives when possession becomes part of the work rather than the end of it. Through possession-based obedience, he’s learned to remain clear-headed, engaged, and responsive while carrying his reward. Now we’re working on transferring that same thoughtful state into obedience under anticipation, where his arousal is highest.

What I find beautiful about dog training is that the underlying principles are surprisingly few. Learning theory, biology, motivation, reinforcement, arousal, and behavior remain constant. These principles don’t change.

Methods, however, are endless.

When you truly understand the principles, you’re no longer limited to copying techniques. You can create, adapt, experiment, and invent. Two trainers may use completely different methods and still succeed because both methods are built upon the same principles: the fundamental truths of how animals learn and behave.

The principles are few and enduring. The methods are infinite. The art of training lies in understanding the difference.
