When 1,000 synchronized drones take over the deep playa, the line between technology and organic life completely vanishes. 🌌🛰️
Behold the breathtaking centerpiece of the “Kinship” performance at Burning Man 2023. Created by the visionary artists at Studio DRIFT @studio.drift (led by Ralph Nauta @ralphnauta ) alongside creative producer Lucas van Oostrum @dutchcreators and Drone Stories @dronestories.show , this massive aerial installation was so much more than just a tech demo, it carried a heavy, profound message. 💭
Aligned with the Burn’s 2023 “Animalia” theme, this shimmering, cosmic whale represented one of the 164,000 species currently fighting for survival on the global endangered species list. It served as a striking, luminous call to action to protect and nourish the natural world. 🦊🌎🐘
Behind the Magic: The Technology 🛠️📐
• 1,000 Drones in Perfect Unison: A massive swarm of one thousand custom light drones acting as a single, collective organism across a 270-meter sky canvas.
• Biological Swarm Algorithms: Rather than just tracking standard point-to-point animations, the tech leverages sophisticated algorithms based on natural animal behaviors (like starling murmurations and schooling fish) to make the whale’s movements feel fluid, graceful, and alive.
• Battling the Playa Elements: Operating a fleet this size requires meticulous programming, flawless choreography by Genevieve Jae, and the technical mastery to survive Black Rock City’s notorious dust storms and heat.
As the music vibrated through the desert floor, watching this mechanical leviathan swim seamlessly through the void was a vivid reminder of what happens when human engineering aligns perfectly with an artistic soul. 🐋⚡

Phantasmagoria is an enchanting cocktail bar 🪄 ✨ 🍸

Cocktails have always been the soul of our camp! We put love into every detail, crafting not only delicious flavors, but also nourishing drinks that give a boost of vitamins to our visitors.

All our syrups are handcrafted just a few days before the event, using fresh ingredients like ginger, honey, and watermelon – no special refrigeration needed, just a cool, shaded spot!

This year, we’ve expanded our menu with three new flavors:

🍉 Watermelon Cooler: Vodka, fresh watermelon, passion fruit purée, lemon juice, and sugar syrup
🍓 🫐 Over Berries: Bourbon, frozen berry mix, passion fruit purée, cinnamon syrup, and lemon juice
🍯 🫚 Mezcal Mule: Mezcal, homemade ginger-honey syrup, and fresh lemon juice

This year’s Burning Man experience was an embodiment of pure love and happiness. This event has profoundly transformed me into the person I am today, awakening my heart’s best qualities: kindness, love, honesty, creativity and responsibility. My once-significant ego has been humbled, and I’m now happy to sacrifice my own desires for the greater good of our campmates and visitors.

The journey wasn’t easy, especially in the early years. However, feeling responsible for providing an incredible experience for our community has driven me to persevere. Seeing participants return home every year , reunited with their loved ones, is the greatest reward.

The importance of money fades in comparison to the lifelong friendships forged during our time together. The playa reveals authentic human personalities, often hidden in daily life. Although this can be disappointing at times, it’s a precious gift to see people’s true selves.

I’m grateful for every moment, lesson, and friend. This community gives my life meaning. We connect people, create unforgettable stories, and bring out the best in humans: talents, love, and selflessness. When you dedicate yourself to the community, the playa rewards you with gifts you even can’t imagine to get…

As I return to my daily life, I’m trying to hold onto the incredible human beauty I experienced during my time on the playa. It’s a reminder that this world is full of amazing people, and it gives me hope and inspiration to carry throughout the year.
