Time,attention,focus portals unseen.
When I accepted the invitation for an artist takeover at DuYe moves on GI didn’t imagine id be doing all this labor,lol. And still I rise to the occasion of transformation knowing that as a soul expressing on the canvas of life I AM a masterpiece. Elevating spaces to higher vibrational frequencies through creative expression as an artist.

Meet @chicava , a polyhyphenate performer, actor, producer, and one of LiberArte’s Liberation Through the Arts grantees from the past cycle. ✨

Burlesque is her primary discipline, but Chicava also explores acting and stand-up comedy. For 15 years, she ran Brown Girls Burlesque, a project featuring Black women and other women of color that created a space for them in burlesque where one didn't previously exist.

Today, Chicava serves as Programs Director of Chicava Sanctuary, whose primary project, @duyemoves , operates on Governors Island as a micro-institution for the arts, serving artists and the community.

Through DuYe Moves, they offer free programming throughout the summer, with a foundation in dance and movement, including African Diaspora dance and cultural dance.

Gratitude to everyone who came through Saturday for the closing/artist talk of Periwinkle, Mourning Doves, and Pound Cake: In Search of Our Mothers' Garden.

Especially those who partcipated in the community read aloud of books written by women in the collection. We should forever speak the names of our mothers, and aunties Octavia Butler, June Jordan, Toni Cade Bambara, and bell hooks touched by their spirits to take center stage. And to all those who are a part of this living archive.

Meet Chicava Tate, LiberArte grantee. ✨🌱

Chicava R.L. Tate is the Creative Director of DuYe Moves, a community arts house on Governors Island offering free dance, wellness, and arts programming. Rooted in the principles of Beloved Community, DuYe Moves creates a safe third space where artists, practitioners, and neighbors gather in fellowship.

Chicava is also a certified Universal Healing Tao and Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi Instructor, bringing these practices into corporate wellness and private client work. Her fifteen year tenure as Creative Producer of Brown Girls Burlesque shaped her commitment to political, theatrical storytelling as feminine sovereignty. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College focused on spirituality and Black burlesque heritage, a Fashion Marketing BS from Hampton University, and an AAS in Fashion Design from Parsons.

Project spotlight: Journey of a Black Girl Exhibition, presented by Courtney Brooks Gallery. This exhibition creates a dedicated space to celebrate the multifaceted journey, resilience, creativity, and strength of Black girls and women. Through photography, paint, and handcrafted storytelling, it explores nostalgia, sisterhood, identity, and belonging, creating a powerful communal voice and inviting intergenerational connection.

Sept 12 and 13 (6:30pm) at Flux 4 (56-21 2nd street, Long Island CIty) comes Underground Underwater, our love letter to the buried waterways of NYC. Another existential snafu. Another dying day. A long buried note. I did not Fall in the Garden, I am synched and sourced. I hold my heart and weep, take my place behind the grandmothers. “They say every man needs protection…” I lick a new wound. I lick an old wound. I put on my socks and shoes. I fix my hair. Bluebeard has a marriage proposal and keys. A fool aims a cannon at my heart. Having survived a century of men’s war, I am a peaceful woman; I can only weep for one’s fall from my graces. “They say every man must fall.” To love a woman is to will for yourself many deaths in service to life. Even Skywalker needed Mrs. Lucas. Serpent mother sheds a worldly shadow; she just wanna be prepared. May we swim easy through lapping silver waters of vast heavens.

The SILVERS opening @forestfortreescollective received an estimated 400 attendees! I’m so humbled, and I’m so overjoyed to get to do the work I do in such beautiful company on such beautiful land. If you hung artwork, offered a tribute, brought food, printed a print, cleaned a plate, or if you just listened to a grandma’s story: thank you. If anyone asks, I’d love to but I have a bunch of lonely ritualistic things to do first. 🖤
