Meet the Cardinal Climber — Wilmington’s very own Hummingbird Vine!

This dazzling annual vine (Ipomoea quamoclit) rockets up to 15–20 feet in a single season, cloaking trellises, fences, and arbors in lush, feathery foliage and brilliant red, star-shaped blooms.

• Hummingbird Magnet: 🧲
Its long, tubular flowers are perfectly designed for hummingbirds, who can hover and sip nectar with their specialized beaks. One vine can draw dozens of these tiny aerial acrobats daily!

• Star of the Show: ⭐️
Each flower features five pointed lobes that form a striking five-pointed star — earning it the “Cardinal” name for its vivid red hue reminiscent of a cardinal’s plumage.

• Nighttime Surprise: 🌙
The blooms stay open into the evening, glowing against the twilight and providing extended feeding opportunities for pollinators.

• Cypress Connection: 🌲
Its delicate, deeply lobed leaves resemble those of cypress trees, giving it the alternate name Cypress Vine. Native to tropical regions, it thrives beautifully in our North Carolina heat and humidity.

• Easy & Rewarding: 🥳
A true “plant it and watch it climb” gem — perfect for vertical gardening in Wilmington’s coastal gardens.

If you see these fiery red trumpets climbing around town, you’re witnessing nature’s own high-speed hummingbird diner! 🎺🌺🐦

Who else has these in their yard?

Tag a fellow gardener!
