I think about how many little worlds are packed into this region. In one weekend you can walk a manga swap, eat your way through a Nigerian pop-up, crash a fake shaadi in your loudest lehenga, and end up at a Salvadoran festival with a whole community out celebrating. None of it overlaps and all of it is here. You don't have to belong to a place to show up for it, you just have to show up. Save this. Send it to whoever's always down. This interactive piece, Secret Garden, is a “#cyberdeck ” that invites explorers into a mossy and magical landscape, showing that participation and attention can create meanings beyond discovery. The object is shaped like a laptop computer, where the visitor will lift up the lid to reveal a touchscreen monitor, playing a hand-drawn animation of the little creature figurines living their lives. The visitor can also write down a wish/message to leave in a moss-filled receptacle, and pick out a star from the star-jar to take home with them. The visitor’s act of witnessing, contributing, and partaking is the mechanism of uncovering the nature of the space, allowing its playful creature inhabitants to come flying into life. Making “inputs” into the system unlocks its confessions and wonders. Installation at @transformerdc for emerging artists comics cohort!
