Post Fire Summer Photo Dump

I was on the VIA train home when I got the call that the house was on fire. It felt like I left my body. The train was 2.5 hours late. I didn’t arrive back in town till 2:30am.

I’m grateful my train was late. I didn’t have to watch my home go up in smoke. I still haven’t been to the house. It’s condemned anyway.

The next day our friend @bollywrights1 drove us to pick up Leila from overnight camp. Because no one slept the night before. She sat in the back and sang the songs she learned, told us about how some kids wouldn’t sleep, and how much fun she had. We stopped for icecream.

When we got home we told her outside on the front steps of my parents. My therapist said she’ll need to feel like she can run. And to absolutely not do it in the car.

Telling her was awful. Watching some of her innocence leave her. She screamed, cried, stomped, cried some more. It was pure. It was raw. It was heartbreaking.

Since then the kindness we’ve the love we’ve received from our family, our friends, our neighbours, the comedy community, the media, strangers, and more has been so touching and beautiful. A fundraiser and an event to support it was created by cj and Kristy from @windsorlaughs at the @thetipsytoucan.ph. It was a magical evening.

Thanks to my cousin Julie, Leila and I were able to still go and have a cottage week with my cousins and their kids and my Aunt and Eric. She got to play at the beach with her cousins like I did as a child. Julie’s family has also had a hard time and we all just needed each other. I’ll never forget it.

I got to see two of my university roommates and extended family.

I’ve reconnected with old friends, formed stronger bonds, let go of old anger, performed: well and poorly

I’ve spent most of my life feeling alone. And right now, I don’t feel alone at all.

I’ve seen who shows up. Who loves me. Who knows how to put past shit aside and do the right thing. It’s been really wonderful in a weird way.

I hate that this happened. But I’m grateful for the love in my life.

Also, I found my old bowling 🏆#winning

This is very LinkedIn of me, but last night was so humbling. To be surrounded by loved ones - new and old, neighbours, strangers and a bunch of dummy comedians is something I’ll never forget until it’s time for dementia to take me.

Huge thank you to @kristylynnsings and @cjsaysthings from @windsorlaughs for putting on such an amazing show and for all of your help love and support.

Huge thank you to @thetipsytoucan.ph for all your support in helping continue to grow the Windsor comedy scene and for hosting the event.

Thank you to all the comedians:
@jpelcomedy for hosting the heck out of the show
@eric_white_comedy for doing your chair bit
@joshuachemello for doing 9pm comedy at 8:45
@scottsviland my love, for braving the border and hilariously singing your heart out
Leo Dufour - the reason comedy exists in Windsor - for coming and performing. What an honour.
@edkonyha my cans did look great. Thank you for noticing.
@santoambre what a fun surprise. So many Emily’s in the room
@adam.loosh my favourite delightful young man
@dylan_dalimonte 16% of Americans also think chocolate milk comes from brown cows. You’re not alone.
@aaronbroughtoncomedy for almost getting cancelled
@reedhewitt - bet you thought I forgot you again. Remember you would be tall if you were famous.
Taylor Last - who’s off the gram atm. My dear funny friend. I love you.
@curtiscoleman_ is starting a cult. I’m joining.
@kristylynnsings god damn voice of an angel.

Thank you to everyone who came, wanted to come, and those didn’t want to come but wanted the show to go well.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

It’s nice to feel loved during such a hard, chaotic, and destabilizing time.

I will be forever changed from this. Thank you.

I hope I haven’t missed anyone.
