PREP WORK 🔑

The goal is not to become really good at drills or make every hitter the same…

We use prep work to create a FEEL for something each hitter needs; so when we move into BP, machine work, challenge rounds & eventually the game, they can COMPETE instead of think 🎯

Dylan — No Stride
Dylan’s been working on a slightly opened stance because he was getting stiff & cutting himself off. Taking away the stride lets Dyl feel his hips work all the way through while delivering the barrel with some whip… without sacrificing balance.

Sam — Open 45s
Sam’s been working on creating a hinge instead of getting squatty which helps him turn behind the baseball. The constraint is important: his feet are already opened toward the pull side, so his body still has to organize itself & feel CF…grounded with direction.

Maceo — One-Hand Work
Maceo wants to be capable of finding the barrel whether he’s early, on time or late — not dependent on one perfect swing at one perfect timing window. Isolating each hand exposes the path and gives him another way to feel the barrel. Barrel control + barrel accuracy.

Create the feel → remove the thought → compete ‼️‼️‼️

@tyler.tolve has been putting a HUGE emphasis on prep work to get each hitter’s body moving the right way. TONS of work with these hitters + the 10 other Grinder’s Club members all month. Plenty more ahead & pumped to see these guys in game action again 📈

Baserunning is a SKILL. How often are you practicing it?

Too many players disregard baserunning…then show up their freshman fall already behind the 8-ball. It’s one of the quickest ways to stand out… positively OR negatively.

🚨You don’t need speed to be a good baserunner🚨Great baserunning is all about ➡️ LEADS. JUMPS. READS. DECISIONS.

At 1B: straight steals, secondaries, LHP jab-step reads + first move. Poor jump? Shut the steal down and turn it into a secondary. We mix in pickoffs and different leg kicks because the goal isn’t to create robots, it’s to create baseball players who can read, react & make good decisions 🧠

At 2B: working on vaulting. On time with the vault = GO. Off-time = secondary. You must be DISCIPLINED with your vaulting ‼️ IF the timing isn’t right, don’t go 🔑

At 3B: right-left-right, timing the last step w/ ball crossing the play, all the while your eyes following the baseball the entire way, anticipating ball down, then working back in FAIR territory while tracking the catcher’s throw back to the pitcher 🎯

The standard: You will never get thrown out on a steal if you only go when you have a good jump. Learn to recognize when you don’t have a good jump, and simply don’t go. There are ZERO base coaches in whiffle ball…play with your EYES 👀

And if you’re FAST and you pair that speed with elite jumps, reads and instincts? Now you’re an ASSET.

Love the INTENT of the Grinder’s in these vids…how you do one thing is how you do EVERYTHING 🙌

Be honest — how often are you actually PRACTICING baserunning?

Should we host a Grinder’s Club Baserunning Clinic?

Do you aspire to play this game at the highest level? Everybody wants to be a shortstop — but the higher you go, the more valuable it becomes to play BASEBALL. The Grinder’s emphasize this daily 🔑

I take a lot of pride in being a lifelong learner. The second you think you know it all, you stop getting better. Iron sharpens iron — great coaches learn from coaches AND players. All the work you see above was inspired by those below ⬇️

1️⃣ 3-Ball Crow Hop Drill — inspired by Colorado Rockies coach & 6-4-3 alum MJ Rookard(@mjrookard ). Chop → read/time the short hop → reset, finishing the third rep through a full crow hop.

2️⃣ 3-Finger Kill Spot — picked up from FSU standout & 6-4-3 alum John Stuetzer (@john.stuetzer ) after his summer in the Cape Cod League. Ball secured with the pinky/ring finger while working drop steps, positioning & relaxed catches with the “kill spot” fingers.

3️⃣ Fungo Reads + Throws — pure DP (@dannypralgo ) inspired… so important to implement training into real situations. Mix fly balls + ground balls at game speed, force decisions and make the player apply the mechanical work they just trained. Low, hard throws needed + you can have players work cutoff redirects & tag plays on the back side of the play🔥

Rep it. Push it. Compete with it ‼️

We’re not developing robots, we’re developing BASEBALL PLAYERS 🧠
