Squatting is the king of athletic performance
Far too many fake trainers like to devalue the squat, arguing that strength isn’t sports specific, or that the injury risk is too high. If you’re being trained by someone who sounds like this, RUN!! These people don’t know what they’re talking about and will most likely get you hurt.
There is literally MOUNTAINS of research advocating the use of squats in performance programmes. Studies have found a high correlation between improved squat strength and:
Sprint speed
Movement economy
Injury reduction
Jumping prowess
Reduced rehabilitation timeline
Leg hypertrophy
Increased bone, tendon and ligament density, size and stiffness.
Whether you’re a sprint, thrower, lifter, cyclist you need to emphasize the squat in your training. We recommend squatting twice a week, once heavy, 3-6 sets of 2-6 reps, and once for hypertrophy, 3-6 of 8-15 reps.
