Yesteryear

By Caro Claire Burke

Natalie is a tradwife influencer who lives on a ranch with her kids, her conservative cowboy husband Caleb and her army of nannies who do the dirty work behind the scenes. She is living the blissful life she has always aspired to live. Until one day she wakes up in a horrid reality, where her husband, her children and her house are all familiar yet not quite the same—she has woken up in the 18th century.🚜

This book is the sensation of 2026 and I was waiting to get my paws onto it. As goes with most satire, it is a polarising read. Natalie and Caleb are not particularly likeable and that can be an issue for some readers. But I devoured this book. As a dystopian thriller, this is a complete page turner. Themes of modern day feminism and agency are dispersed throughout this book and they all came together really well for me. 👩‍🌾

I think every little detail in this novel is meticulously inserted and holds value. No character is moral or upstanding but that’s ok, because that’s how it works with real life people as well. Considering it’s a debut novel, Burke has done a stellar job with the world building🤰🏻

For a world that is getting rapidly radicalised, I would highly recommend this read! One of my favourites of the year!

John of John

By Douglas Stuart

In the late 1990s, John-Calum “Cal” Macleod returns home after 4 years spent away in Edinburgh to help out his father John, a sheep herder with his maternal grandmother, Ella, who is ill. Cal and John share a complex dynamic filled with secrets and undercurrents that bubble beneath the surface, and as they spend more time together, their clandestine lives begin to reveal themselves.🐑

This is my first Douglas Stuart, I picked this up after @dylanjosephreads suggested another book of his and then this one got shortlisted for the Booker. This is arguably the most well written book I have read all year. Stuart is fantastic at underlining interpersonal tension, at laying emphasis on the nuances of these characters without ever devolving into exposition. The novel is extremely layered and fairly internalised but very gripping in the way it held my attention.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This book works as a hallmark of queer literature. So much of the subtext is deep yet it never felt performative in anyway. Every single character is well rounded and worth rooting for, no matter how flawed they maybe.🩵

One of my favourite reads of the year, highly recommend kicking off your Booker readings with this one!

Julie Chan is Dead

By Lainn Zhang

Julie Chan is a plain Jane grocery store worker who is cursed with a famous Instagram influencer twin, Chloe. On a visit to her sister, she finds her corpse in her apartment. But just as she’s about to dial 911, Julie gains an opening into Chloe’s opulent lifestyle and decides to steal her identity. 👯

I am not one who reads a lot of thrillers but I devoured this one. It’s fun, fresh, very fast paced and a dark yet biting insight into the frivolity of Instagram influencer culture. I also appreciate that this was told from an Asian American perspective and how that diaspora conversation ties into fame.😽

Zhang’s storytelling her is a cumulative of a lot of books I’ve read recently. It’s Yellowface’s satire meets Bunny’s magical realism meets Counterfeit’s thrill factor. None of the characters are particularly likeable, everyone is shallow or greedy and the second half of the book really goes off the rails. But I had a blast throughout! If you like experimental thrillers do check this one out! 📱

Want a weird little book to read this weekend? Let me introduce you to Open Throat by @ennuiperkins

💬 QOTD: What are your plans for the weekend?

GUYS. This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read.

I first saw @dylanjosephreads recommend it, and then a bookseller at my local indie bookstore told me I had to pick it up. It’s under 200 pages, but somehow it packs in so much humor, heartbreak, and wonderfully strange writing.

The story is told from the perspective of a queer, gender-nonconforming mountain lion living beneath the Hollywood sign. Because of that, the prose is simple and direct, but it also has this incredibly dreamlike quality. It genuinely feels like the mountain lion is sitting beside you telling you its story. It survives by watching hikers and listening to their conversations, and I absolutely loved that it dreams of moving to New York and getting a therapist.

As the novel unfolds, the mountain lion reflects on its life, the human condition, and memories of its childhood. After being forced to leave its home following the destruction of a nearby homeless encampment, it forms an unexpected friendship with a young girl. The final section of the book is surreal, tender, and genuinely beautiful.

This was such an incredible read. Weird, funny, heartbreaking, and completely unlike anything I’ve read before. It’s one of those books that lodges itself in your brain and will get you out of a slump!

Gunk

By Saba Sams

Jules works at a student pub run by her ex husband Leon, even though they parted ways years ago. She toils away at night while Leon bides his day flirting and mingling with women much younger than him. When Leon hires a 19 year old woman, Nim, Jules is intrigued. Nim discovers she’s pregnant and the two women form an unconventional bond. 🤰🏻

Firstly I want to apologise for my hiatus on here, have been unwell for a few days but things are back on track now!

I read this book on Mother’s Day and it moved me deeply. A contemporary yet poignant look at both motherhood and sisterhood, this is a modern literary gem. Sams is a master at crafting interesting female characters with depth and empathy. The themes of infertility and maternal instinct (or the lack of it) are also very well handled here.🍺

I also like that each character has their own arc, not one of them is vilified, lots of nuance in the way the story has been written.
