Huge thank you to everyone who came to our opening reception of 'Urbs in Myco!' 🍄 Come check out the show before May 10!

'Urbs in Myco', a mushroom themed Chicago gallery exhibit curated by the Chicago Mushroom Club @chicagomushroomclub hosted by the Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics, The Chicago Mosaic School's affiliate gallery.

The Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics presents “Urbs in Myco,” an exhibition showcasing the diverse and imaginative interpretations of fungi through the eyes of Chicago’s emerging art community. This show highlights the intersection of nature and urban life in Chicago. Fungi serve as potent symbols of growth, connection, and rebirth within our city. From abstract representations to intricate, fungal-based works, “Urbs in Myco” offers a collective meditation on the role of fungi in our natural and urban environments. It highlights how these remarkable organisms can symbolize resilience, interconnectedness, and change. This exhibition unites local artists, activists, and Chicago Mushroom Club members who explore the far-reaching and layered world of mycology features through various mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, fiber art, and more.

Our government maybe crumbling around us/actively harming our community, but at least we have art. It’s Zine Season!!!! We’re also psyched to announce a partnership with @chicagomosaicschool to bring you our inaugural spring art show!

Artists of all backgrounds and practices are encouraged to submit work in any medium that explores mycological themes—whether tangentially related or directly made from mycological materials.

We are especially committed to supporting artists from marginalized communities and those who have faced barriers to entry in the art world. To do our part in making the chi art scene more inclusive and community oriented, we are prioritizing work by diverse, non-traditional, and emerging artists. If you have a unique perspective or approach, we want to see your work.

ART IS STILL PROTEST
ART IS STILL OURS

Performance artists are encouraged to submit performance proposals as we will be hosting a variety of events throughout the run of the show.

Deadline for submissions: March 14th, 2025
Exhibition dates: April 11th to May 10th
Gallery location: GoCM 1127 W Granville Ave

Artists whose work have been chosen will be contacted March 17th, we’re so psyched to see what our community can do!

*****The Big Justice AI Chatbot will never be able to take our art away from us.*****

We're going International baby! 🥳🌎🍄✨ On Saturday Oct 19th at 5:30, let's give a warm welcome to Mead & Dylan, who are coming all the way from the Windy City to tell you stories about the world's most iconic & recognizeable mushroom: the Amanita Muscaria (and it's close relatives!)

These two fungi connoisseurs founded the Chicago Mushroom Club, and they'll be taking a deep dive into the strange, magical & fascinating history of the Amanitas & the surprising ways humans have approached them throughout history!

If you're into mushroom LORE, then *amanita* you to buy a ticket! 😄🎟️
See you there! 😇🙌

Gloiodon strigosus is an effused-reflexed, hydnoid fungus. The ombré stilettos draped from the hymenophore contrast the shaggy, umber pileus.

Devin and I found this specimen on a downed hardwood log covered in moss. It was tucked into a pocket in the wood, carved out by a woodpecker.

G. strigosus is the type species of the genus Gloiodon. Recent studies have moved this genus to the family Bondarzewiaceae despite it previously being placed with Auriscalpium.

G. strigosus is relatively common in North America, but underdocumented. In Europe, the species is rare, even making Polands red-list for organisms in peril. This may be due to its connection to old, well preserved forests.
