Our lives are defined by the past. Defined by people we never met. Defined by choices we had no say in.

What if we could be defined by the future?
We are building a story where a visionary examines and changes the information layer that has encrusted our lives. Perhaps we can pull something good out of the future, into today.

We spent a week in 2025 building material from the starting ingredients of home and memory, and the aesthetics of the cyberpunk genre. Seeded out of what it is to live here, in Calgary / Mohkinstsis, at the Confluence, a place where things mix.

Large Language Models and algorithms dominate our information spaces. The headlines (served by software) make our science fiction dreams feel like documentaries.

This project was funded by Calgary Arts Development.

Created by: CJ Gordon, Dylan Lindsay, and Jason Mehmel

We invite you into the world of reset, where we explore the intersection of humanity and artificial intelligence, and which changes every night.

Four figures wake up in an isolated room, with no memory of how they arrived. In an AI-driven world, being human can be dangerous.

Each performance unfolds as a high-stakes mystery that changes nightly. Even the actors don’t know who will turn out to be human, when the show begins.

WHEN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TAKES THE STAGE!

An Immersive Theatrical Puzzle Where the Answer
Changes Every Night.

Sage Theatre, in Association with Vertical City, present RESET by Bruce Barton.

Calgary, AB —Four figures wake up in an isolated room, with no memory of how they arrived. Each holds a single, fragmented clue—just out of reach. As they begin to share what little they know, a chilling realization emerges: the real question is not who they are, but what they are. Because only one of them is human, and in an AI-driven world, being human can be dangerous. reset by Bruce Barton, presented by Sage Theatre, in association with Vertical City, runs from March 18 - 22, 2026 at Contemporary Calgary.

“We’ve been developing this project in some capacity for 8 years, and yet somehow we’re completely addressing the conversations of our AI-filled current moment! Our story addresses our humanity by questioning it at every step; what about our experiences, our responses, make us human?” said Jason Mehmel, Sage Theatre’s Artistic Director.

“This production is a highlight of the craft of acting, stripped down to the fine-tuned artistic impulses of some of Calgary’s best actors. The details of humanity might show up in the smallest reaction; we want our audience to be watching closely. The stories that lurk underneath these characters are also not simply sci-fi tropes, but lyrical, human moments. To allow for that, we’re collaborating with filmmaker Emil Agopian, who captures these characters and broadcasts to screens allowing the audience to keep a close eye on all four characters, constantly.”

reset, written by Bruce Barton and created in association with Vertical City, is an intimate, immersive theatre experience where the audience becomes part of the investigation. Each performance unfolds as a high-stakes mystery that changes nightly—because even the actors don’t know the answer when the show begins.

Here we are... Another World Premiere-Eve at @sage_theatre

The second time I've been lucky enough to helm the first production of a play by my colleague, friend, family @natalie.meisner.

Boom Baby is a story that explores the depths of hope and love in the face of incredible challenges. Iona, an east-coaster working in the oil patch, finds herself with an unplanned pregnancy while encountering an executive couple who can't conceive.

What would you trade for a baby of your own?

A portrait of Alberta and Canada and how we approach the resources that define our lives.

This is a fantastic story. It feels like an extension of the very best conversations Natalie and I share, laced through with honest, compassionate portraits and drama of very different, very human people.

It's also often hilarious.

You need to catch it before it sells out, or before it closes.

The artists I get to work with are standing with a small village of folks who have been part of the play's development, and with whom we join the wider Boom Baby family.

And an extra round of gratitude to Pamela Halstead, whose presence at every stage of this production has been ineffable, irrefutable, and irreplaceable.

In a strange trio of 'parenthood' between script and stage, of playwright, dramaturge, and director, of the chosen family we find and build in theatre, I send love to Pamela.
