On this episode of Barks to Basics, Jamie explains why crate training is such a valuable tool when adding a new dog to your household. Giving your existing dog a break from the puppy and providing each dog with their own space can help prevent tension and create a more peaceful home. Remember, your dogs don’t have to be together every minute of the day to build a great relationship!

Jamie also discusses the importance of being realistic about multi-dog ownership. Before adding another dog, consider whether you have the time, finances, space, and training commitment to help everyone thrive. Many households successfully manage multiple dogs, but if challenges arise, slow things down and return to the basics, like walking the dogs together to build positive associations.

On this episode of Barks to Basics, Jamie shares practical tips for training multiple dogs at once and explains why the best approach depends on each dog’s personality, focus, and skill level. With five dogs of Jamie’s own, training everyone together can be challenging! Jamie focuses on rewarding the dog who gets the cue right, which can encourage the others to join in and learn.

If a dog becomes too distracted, individual training sessions can help build focus and confidence. And here’s the best part: you don’t need hours of training every day to make progress! Just two minutes per dog each day can add up to meaningful practice. For five dogs, that’s only 10 minutes a day!

On this episode of Barks to Basics, Jamie discusses why adding another dog to your household is a decision that deserves careful thought and planning. Taking things slowly during introductions is important, but it’s just as essential to consider whether you have the time, energy, and financial resources to care for another dog.

Adding a new dog shouldn’t come at the expense of the dog you already have. Every dog deserves individual attention, proper care, mental stimulation, and a happy, fulfilling life. The goal isn’t simply to have multiple dogs under one roof — it’s to create a home where every dog can thrive.
