🚀 Six years of Fab City Research — and what a finale! On Sept 10, we celebrated the closing of our dtec.bw & EU Next Generation funded project “Fab City – Decentralized, Digital Production for Urban Value Creation” with our amazing project partners. 📊 Project lead Dr. Sonja Buxbaum-Conradi took us through six years of research — the places, people, and prototypes that shaped it all. 🎤 A panel with Martin Duensing, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Knieling, Kristina Kölling, Mathias Rüsch, Karen Löhnert & Lennard Stoever explored the future of local production: it’s about resilience, circularity, and reimagining our cities. 👥 Our Gallery Walk brought it all to life — OpenLabs, open-source hardware, microfactories & circular production, shown as real prototypes and tools. 🏆 We wrapped with the MAKER CHALLENGE Hamburg 2026 Award Ceremony — a glimpse into the next generation of urban innovation. The project may be ending, but Fab City Hamburg keeps building. 🌐 Huge thanks to everyone who made these six years happen 💛 #FabCity #Research #DigitalFabrication #OpenSource

Via Felice Casati 29, Milano mar-sab, dalle 11.00 alle 19.00 EN Feelings Are Always Local explores creations that make use of technology while remaining deeply rooted in the hearts and minds of a community. The only certainty along this journey is that emotions cannot be calculated: they are always local and belong to a specific dimension. We look forward to welcoming you until February 21 to explore this dimension. Via Felice Casati 29, Milan

On February 5 at 6:30 pm, we will open the exhibition Feelings Are Always Local, curated by Tiziana Gemin. Inaugurazione: 5 febbraio 2026 alle 18.30 Date: dal 5 febbraio al 21 febbraio 2026 Orari di apertura: mar- sab, dalle 11:00 alle 19:00 Luogo: Spazio Milesi, Via Felice Casati, 29, Milano EN Human relationships are not governed by algorithms: they unfold in unpredictable ways, according to dynamics that are not always linear. The exhibition Feelings Are Always Local, which we will host from February 5 to 21, documents the shared journey of a group of artists who created a dynamic network in Milan, experimenting with the evolution of digital tools from the early 2000s to the present day. It is possible that the works reveal a fluid cross-pollination born from mutual interactions, suggests Tiziana Gemin, a witness to this collective process and curator of the exhibition. The only certainty is that feelings cannot be calculated: they are always local and pertain to a specific dimension. How can art and culture contribute to developing a positive forward-looking European understanding of competitiveness that is confident, open minded, and attractive? Crucially, this entails understanding Europe’s social, cultural, and environmental standards as competitive strength rather than weakness. Based on this programmatic question, a consortium of representatives of European cultural, research, and academic institutions came together for the EU SUMMIT Pacesetters in Malaga in collaboration with the vice-president of the EU Commission, Teresa Ribera, to develop prototypical ideas for how arts, culture, heritage and creativity can drive sustainable and just transformation in the context of pressing collective challenges such as AI development and research, climate transition, and the future of healthcare. New Practice participated in the SUMMIT through talks and panel discussions on their research projects on Audience Science and Cultural Heritage. Represented by Prof. Albert Lang and Alessandro Mac-Nelly, New Practice was the only programme to also bring along a group of students, namely Suzan Hanow, Ben Christ, and Alexandre Bizri. Their perspectives and inputs were invaluable and necessary contributions in discussions with political, cultural, and economic decision-makers. The SUMMIT’s consortium brought together fifteen partners: Norges Teknisk-Naturvitenskapelige Universitet, Uniwersytet Jagielloński, the European Creative Business Network, T6 Ecosystems S.r.l., the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the University of Cambridge, the Università degli Studi G. d’Annunzio Chieti Pescara, the Federación Andaluza de Municipios y Provincias, the Fundación Genalguacil Pueblo Museo, the Galway International Arts Festival, the Ośrodek Kultury im. C. K. Norwida, the Akademia Sztuk Pięknych im. Jana Matejki w Krakowie, Stichting Dyne.org, EIT Culture & Creativity, and the National University of Ireland Galway.

At the dtec.bw Conference 2025 on the campus of Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg, experts from defense, politics, business, start-ups and research came together to discuss the digitalization and technologies of tomorrow. Our contribution focused on the dtec.bw project Fab City [🔗 newproductioninstitute.de/en/fab-city]: building urban ecosystems where data and knowledge circulate globally, while production happens locally. This vision of decentralized, resilient, and sustainable value creation directly resonates with dtec.bw’s mission to strengthen digital sovereignty and technological innovation. Alongside our consortium meeting, we presented the Fab City project in the OpenLab Mobile Truck – with films, exhibits, and live demonstrations. The interactive setting fostered inspiring conversations on how local production and circular economy approaches can contribute to the resilience and innovation capacity of society as a whole. A big thank you to all partners, participants, and organizers for creating such a fruitful atmosphere of exchange and collaboration!
