Er cof am Aberfan: a disaster that wiped out roughly half of a village’s population. We will never forget: • 144 total heart beats. • 116 little smiles lost, aged between 7 and 10, roughly half of the village’s youth population. • 28 adults, including 5 teachers and 23 local residents. • 240 pupils were inside Pantglas Junior School when the landslide struck; 124 pupils survived, though only 5 children were rescued alive directly from the primary debris field inside the school. The Avalanche & Debris • 9:15 AM: The exact time the disaster occurred, just minutes after the school day and morning assembly had begun. • 150,000 tonnes (roughly 140,000 cubic yards) of liquefied coal waste broke away from the mountain. • Up to 50 mph: The speed at which the black slurry roared down the mountainside. • 30 to 40 feet: The height of the tidal wave of debris that engulfed the school and local buildings. • 18 houses and 1 farmhouse were completely destroyed alongside the junior school. Colliery & Site Data • 7 spoil tips loomed on the mountain slopes above Aberfan. • Tip Number 7 was the specific heap that collapsed. It had been active since 1958. • 111 feet (34 meters): The height of Tip 7 at the time of its collapse. Aftermath & Recovery • 9 days: The duration of the intense rescue and recovery operation. • 8 days: The length of time Queen Elizabeth II delayed visiting the village, a decision she famously cited as the greatest regret of her reign. • £1,750,000: The total global donations raised for the Aberfan Disaster Fund. • £150,000: The amount the UK government controversially forced the disaster fund to pay to clear the remaining tips, a sum that was finally paid back to the village in 1997.
