CAUGHT ONE!!!

More than anything, I’m grateful.

I’m grateful to God, I’m grateful for my friends, this hunting community, and everyone who reached out, checked in, offered advice, offered to help, or was genuinely pulling for me. There are plenty of things about social media I could do without, but the community I’ve found through hunting is something I’ll never take for granted.

This one wasn’t easy.

After the shot, we tracked until we lost blood and eventually decided to bring in a dog. Andrew had just finished another track 5 hours away. He drove more than five hours through the night, slept in his car for a little while, got back on the road, and showed up at first light.

Then we went in and found my bull.

That experience reminded me how much I love meeting people who are truly passionate about what they do. You can’t fake it. When someone genuinely loves their craft, they live it, study it, and obsess over the details. Because of that, they become incredibly freaking good at it.

I see it in my buddy @geoffnemnich with coyote hunting. I saw it in Andrew tracking this bull. Being around people like that always makes me want to be better at the things I care about.

This hunt also carried a weight I wasn’t prepared for.

My mom passed away August 1st.

She wasn’t a hunter. Honestly, she didn’t even really like hunting. But she loved me, and because I loved it, she cared about it.

Whenever I killed something, she was usually one of the first people I sent a picture to. She was always proud. Not necessarily because of the animal, but because she knew what it meant to me. That was my mom. Unconditional love, unconditional support, and always proud of my sister and I.

Packing this bull out, it hit me that I wouldn’t get to send her the picture this time. I wouldn’t get the response telling me how proud she was of me.

That realization brought me to tears on the mountain.

I’ve killed elk before, and hopefully I’ll kill more. But this one was special.

For Mom, I wish I could’ve sent you this picture.

Help us wish our very own @earlimusmaximus a happy birthday!!! We wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Earl and we all happily tolerate him as the boss man. In all seriousness he has worked harder than anyone we know to make this dream a reality and he deserves his roses! Happy birthday Earl!!
