FREE PARTY FASHION 💗

What do people actually wear to free parties? From soundsystem merch and funky accessories to DIY fits, ravewear and whatever’s warm enough for the weather, there’s no one way to dress for a free party.

We take a look at the different styles you’ll find in the crowd, and how free parties give people the space to dress however they want, whether that means going all out or keeping it comfy.

The Boat Stage as ever this year was defined by contrasts, while further cementing itself as our festival’s premier hub for leftfield discovery and genre-blurring experimentation.

The forward-thinking soundscapes of queer rave starters deBasement were full trottle right out of the gate and their raucous energy didn’t let up (and was very photographable, as you may have noticed lol). The Space Lady’s outsider synth pop was met with absolute joy from both artist and audience. SILVERWINGKILLER gave the kind of blistering, chaotic performance that’s making them one of the UK’s most compelling live acts.

Elsewhere Next Wave competition winner multiscreen, whose deadpan electro-pop odes about divorcing your smartphone perfectly set the stage’s idiosyncratic tone and packed the stage out in only its opening set. From there, the marquee became a sanctuary for the surreal and the boundary-pushing. fatboi shariff delivered a masterclass in experimental hip-hop, captivating the crowd with a horror-tinged set full of dense atmospherics and a cursed aura (in the best way). Alongside the rising experimentalism of kloyd, the shadowy, electronic songwriter Sydney Minsky Sargeant transformed the space with intense, rhythmic textures that kept the energy completely unpredictable.

keiyahh impressed with her effortless, swaying R&B, sheherazaad left the audience in awe with her stunning Hindustani and Urdu songwriting, while rising star Jordan Patterson grounded the marquee with an incredibly warm, compelling afternoon performance.

It’s exactly a week since we got our hearing and sanity challenged by @anginedepoitrine and their “invigorating geometric rock” (Uncut), in the first of two sets they played for us.

Our photographers @_burakcingi_ @countessian @gemharrisphoto @chrisofarc and @earth.boyy, alongside videographers @hugohealy (drone) and @tomroods captured both their shows (on Woods and a secret late night Folly set) and immortalised us collectively losing our minds to the band’s inter-galactic math rock.
