Acorns are probably one of the most recognizable wild foods in the U.S., but we wouldn't recommend picking one up and eating it like a peanut...

On the first of three 🍁 fall-themed "Eats Wild" episodes, graphic novelist Mel Gillman talks about this abundant food source and why comics can be an ideal medium for learning about foraging!

Food preservation is a satisfying and practical life skill that is easy to learn—and especially fun to do with a group! 🧑🏾‍🍳👩🏿‍🍳👨🏼‍🍳

This August, join EARTH EATS host Kayte Young for a canning workshop at the Monroe County Public Library's teaching kitchen.

Learn how to safely can fresh produce by making your own blueberry jam. 🫐 Kayte will demonstrate the hot water bath method while participants follow along. Take home a shelf-stable jar of jam, plus recipes for other products to preserve at home!

"I am a human who yearns to remember that she's part of nature in a way that I think our culture is trying to make me forget." 🌎

On our second summer-themed episode of the "Eats Wild" limited series, we head out into the woods with two amateur mushroom hunters: Ileana Haberman, quoted above, and Carl Pearson.

Ileana shares her story of seeking solace gathering chanterelles during the worst of the pandemic. And Carl walks us through the basics of positive identification of edible fungi—in this case, a bicolor bolete that we turned into a decadent pasta dish.

And if you're more interested in the eating than the foraging, stick around to the end for a cooking segment with Chef Nick Dietrich! Nick, a multi-time guest on the show, whips up an elegant salt-baked beet dish featuring wild purslane and wood sorrel from my backyard. 🌿

"One of the wonderful things about using a queer perspective," says sociologist Isaac Leslie, "is that a queer perspective is not only about looking at the experiences of queer people.

"It's primarily concerned with that. But it's also about investigating what gender and sexuality have to do in the lives and the lived experiences of all folks, because everybody is affected by and performs gender and sexuality in one way or another."

This June, @eartheats is revisiting a conversation with Leslie regarding the traditions and assumptions around the role of family within farming. Leslie is an environmental sociologist specializing in justice, sustainability, and economic viability in food systems. They also research and organize with LGBTQ+ farmers and rural residents.

Every forager has their own motivations for hunting for wild food. 🍓🫛

Some of us love the adventure, the treasure hunt, veering off the beaten path in unfamiliar territory, in search of something special. 🥾✨ Some of us love the way it puts us in touch with the seasons and with the place where we live. 🍂🏡 For some of us...it's flavor!

On the first summer-themed episode of our "Eats Wild: limited series, Ross Gay and Tracy Branham explore the potentially transcendent experience of wild berry picking, contemplating memory, time, and maybe even life itself...

Look…hear us out.

If you’ve ever had a spice cake and thought, “This could use about a pound of meat protein,” this is the recipe for you. 🍖 Originally from “The Midwestern Country Cookbook,” the old-fashioned pork cake is…surprising.

And, as Alex put it, “It’s really got everything that people with dietary restrictions can’t eat.”

Check out our full reaction to this delicacy on the Flyover Culture YouTube channel.
