Photo by Jolene Fauchon on May 16, 2026. When in the Eastern Townships of Quebec for Spring Break, it means it’s time for this Albertan to tap the maple trees! Carter loved seeing his grandpa explain the process, drill, then tap…..and less than 24 hours later, the bucket is full!

What a beautiful celebration! The Townships Young Voices Awards gala revealed the winners of this year’s arts and writing competition at La Galerie Perkin’s in Melbourne yesterday afternoon. The venue was full to capacity with young artists and their families and friends. Each winning piece has been published in the April issue of the Townships Sun magazine, which was launched during the gala. Such a heartfelt event which honoured the young, creative community of the Eastern Townships. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who participated in this year’s competition! Keep on creating! (Photographers: Robert Donachie, Noemi Blom and Marie Moliner.)

Fate Line Friday: Balm in Gilead (or Ode to Ogden and Em)

I was wondering what I wanted to write about this morning for my band’s Friday post, having had too unrelenting a week to have processed my next thought, let alone share one with you all. The impediment… war abroad and micro battles at home, in defense of Jews, Iranians, Israelis or just humanity’s right to exist - in peace and respect - free of targeting bullets or free from any need for bombs.

And then the answer came in my email inbox. A notice from @bandcamp that Em Zev has a new musical release - 16 minutes of ambient music and sound recordings inspired this past Summer during Em’s visit to our annual farm house retreat in Ogden, Quebec. Field and forest sounds are prominent in this little bit of bliss that Em has guilded and shared with us all today. A deeply needed soundscape of presence in nature and wafting instrumentation and vocalization.

I immensely enjoyed a few days of having my youngest home for their Concordia reading week, including the random live musical interludes of violin, guitar or voice wafting up from the living room as I worked in my office. Putting them on a train yesterday, bound back to Montreal, I’d forgotten about their impending release. I am so grateful they whole heartedly agreed to add their violin and voice to our new recording of “When Her Century Ends” - my own ode to their late Great Grandma Vera. Remembering and revelling in the joyous sound of Simon and Em in the studio downstairs the other day, adding their parts to my song about Jewish resistance and family love and gratitude, was momentarily drowned out by a need to just navigate this week’s latest moments.

So thank you again Em for your gift of music this and every morning. A reminder that music will truly be one of those sorely needed *balms in Gilead right now.

Purchase and listen to Em’s “Near Ogden” here - https://emzev.bandcamp.com/track/near-ogden
