40 of our senior students in the Practicum in Agriculture classes had the opportunity to visit San Antonio Viejo Ranch for the East Foundation’s Behind the Gates educational experience!
After four years of learning about agriculture in the classroom, this trip allowed our students to connect what they’ve learned to real-world agricultural practices, including cattle ranching, wildlife management, land stewardship, and ranching technology. Experiences like these are so valuable because they help our students see firsthand how their education prepares them for future careers in agriculture and beyond!
A special thank you to our campus administrators for supporting this opportunity, the East Foundation for the invitation, and Mrs. Cox and Mr. Flores for joining us as chaperones!
We are proud of our Bulldogs and grateful for opportunities that bring classroom learning to life!

There’s lots of great work happening when it comes to getting kids involved in conservation. City Kids Adventures and the @eastfoundation is a shining example of what happens when passion to make a difference meets willingness to educate.

Their “Behind The Gates” program allows inner-city kids from San Antonio and the surrounding area, to come get a first-hand look at a working cattle ranch that balances agricultural, habitat preservation, and hunting. Kids are exposed to sights, sounds, and smells that they’ve never encountered before. Most see animals they didn’t even know existed. All of this while learning about the delicate balance between ranching and hunting, where conservation is the common thread.

•Rattlesnake•

If looks could kill! Driving through San Antonio Viejo Ranch with the @eastfoundation we spotted this rattlesnake in the middle of a dirt road. Laid down to get a photo as it made its way across. What a beautiful snake!

🌿 Healthy lands benefit everyone.
Land stewardship helps support wildlife habitat, healthy soils, food production, recreation, carbon sequestration and more. Through Land Stewardship Ambassadors (LSA), high school students gain the knowledge and skills to understand these benefits and become advocates for the natural resources that sustain our communities.
Want to learn more about LSA and who can apply? Join us for an upcoming informational webinar!

EL SAUZ | Home to the largest known population of Ocelots in the United States. I had the honor of visiting and meeting with key stake holders for the new Ocelot Conservation Center being build in Kingsville, TX yesterday. This breeding facility represents a first of its kind collaboration between private land owners, USFWS, Zoo’s, and Universities. It’s an absolute masterclass of collaboration. Texans uniting to recover the Ocelot. It’s a beautiful thing.

For the first time in 45 years of Ocelot research. The Ocelots have a real shot of recovery.

The ocelot, a strikingly beautiful and elusive wildcat, has nearly vanished from the United States. Only two small populations remain in the dense, spiky Tamaulipan thornscrub of Texas—a state where 95 percent of the land is privately owned and working ranches represent the best hope for endangered species. Now, ocelots are getting a little more hope in the form of a new captive breeding facility opening this fall in Kingsville.

The facility, which aims to breed wild male ocelots with zoo-dwelling females, is the culmination of decades of field research from conservation pioneers like Michael Tewes and organizations like East Foundation, which promotes land stewardship on Texas ranches.

Coming to Texas Theaters September 25!

Narrated by @ethanhawke, “Deep in the Heart 2: Texas Rivers” is a celebration of the springs, creeks, rivers, and bays that define the Lone Star State. From the rugged Rio Grande to the thriving waters of the Sabine and Neches, the film encounters resilient otter families, strutting turkeys, and mysterious Alligator Snapping Turtles along the way.

Produced in partnership with @heb, @texanbynature, and @texasparkswildlifefoundation, the wildlife sequences took over three years to film, features never-before-seen footage, and showcases music performed by the @dallaschambersymphony.
